Choosing a fly isn't always as simple as finding one that looks like a trout's dinner.

What's actually on the water?

What are the fish feeding on?

Are they taking insects from the surface or just below it?

Where are the fish sitting?

These are the questions that matter.

As Fishing Guides we spend a lot of time watching the rivers and the insects on them, so we can help anglers understand what's happening rather than simply saying, "Try this fly."

First up, refusal.

Easily the most exhilarating moment of the day.

When that big old wily trout awakens from deep slumber, and rises to inspect your offering, follows it as it drifts downstream for inches, feet, sometimes even yards, before turning away in disgust and returning to its chalky lay.

There is something special about a genuinely wild trout.

It knows its surroundings.

It has adapted to the water, the food and the changing seasons.

Finding one, getting into position and making a good presentation is one of the great pleasures of chalkstream fishing.

River keeping is one of those jobs that most people probably don't think about when they arrive for a day's fishing.

But there is a huge amount involved in balanced river keeping.

Managing river banks.

Not managing river banks.

Knowing when to cut the w**d.

Watching water levels.

Halfway through August already.

There are days when the trout seem willing to eat almost anything.

Then there are days when you can spend an hour watching one fish and wondering what on earth it wants.

That's fishing.

You can know the river, have the right fly and make a good cast.

People have lived beside them, worked on them and depended upon them for centuries.

Mills, farming, water management, fishing and conservation have all played their part in shaping the rivers we know today.
