Keys to Freeze

Keys to Freeze A 9,000 mile unsupported cycling trip from Key West, FL to Deadhorse, AK in support of our national parks

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” - John Muir, Our National Parks

As long as the natural landscapes of the United States have been the lifebloo

d of our nation, they have been under threat from shifting laws and energy exploration. In February 2015, four young explorers will embark on a 9,000 mile unsupported cycling journey from the southernmost to the northernmost points of the United States reachable by road to help preserve America’s natural beauty. Our crew of filmmakers, artists, and writers will collaborate to produce a documentary and a novel about the country’s wild places and the people that are taking action to protect them. Through a partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association, we will fundraise for and participate in preservation projects in parks across the nation.

Over the Christmas holidays, Brady went and did some serious riding in one of England's National Parks, the Yorkshire Dales. To complete the Rapha Festive 500, a challenge to ride 500 km between Christmas Eve and New Years, he and his friend Matt (who's from Yorkshire) rode 500 km (315 mi.), did 8,556 m (28,070 ft.) of climbing, endured freezing temperatures, rain and 50 mph gusts, all over the course of 4 sun up to sundown rides. It was Type 2 fun at its finest and he made a video for your viewing pleasure...

Hey everyone! Wondering what the Keys to Freeze team has been up to for the last year? No? Ok. Well, anyways, last Easter Brady and Rachel hopped back on their bikes for an impromptu bike tour down the legendary Rhine river in Germany. If you’re into castles, excellent bike infrastructure and looking to fill the hole that the end of Keys to Freeze left in your life (we certainly are) check out the full story here:

We’re back! Over a year ago we mounted our Surlys in the early morning fog in Key West, Florida and made our way to the buoy marking the southernmost point of the United States. Combing through footage and reliving the magic has been a surreal experience and with post-production of the documentary now at full steam, we’re going to share screenshots with you more regularly!

One year ago today we woke up in Key West, Florida just before sunrise. Still half asleep, we began a ritual that we would repeat day in and day out for the next six months. Eat oatmeal, brush teeth, fill water bottles, suit up in lycra and figure out how exactly to pack your life onto a bicycle.

On February 25th, 2015 we stood together at the southernmost point of the United States and looked out across the Gulf of Mexico imagining that we could see Cuba through the fog only 90 miles away. In the opposite direction was the whole massive unknown adventure before us, as vivid or obtuse as each one of our minds could conjure. A whole continent unfurled criss-crossed by roads, deserts, mountains, swamps and beaches ultimately coming to a halt at the furthest reaches of the bitter north in the Alaskan Tundra. For the next six months and 8,000 miles the road became our home - our team and the people we met along the way, our family. Even now, far removed from the dirt and the fatigue and the sweat and the headwinds and the overwhelming beauty of the wild I can still feel the magic. It makes me want to go ride.

Where is the team now?

Reese just accepted a job with Backroads and is planning an incredible Patagonia trip.

Rachel is living in Geneva and working for the International Organization for Migration and generally being righteous.

Tyler is working as a nurse and being the man in Asheville, North Carolina

Brady is just starting to edit the documentary and works for Canyon in Germany.

At times, the idea of getting back on the bike, of sitting down on saddle sores for another twelve hours, of riding through rain and snow and sleet, seemed insane. In those trying moments, our mission of raising funds and awareness for our National Parks kept us strong, and pushed us northward.

On December 1st, our fundraising efforts for Climate Ride and the National Parks Conservation Association will come to and end. As of right now, we only have $3,000 left to go to reach our goal of $15,000! All funds donated will go directly to the NPCA and Climate Ride.

This holiday season, as the pressure mounts to buy new things, consider giving the gift of a tax deductible donation to help ensure that our nation's greatest treasures remain protected for generations to come. If you're not convinced, plan a trip to visit a park near you. You won't regret it.

Thanks for everything,

Keys to Freeze

Friends and Followers,

We are proud to share the final video/article of our 15 part Narratively series with you. The last 500 miles of our trip on the Dalton Highway, the road made famous in Ice Road Truckers, was at times surreal and we've done our best to give you a glimpse into that experience with this final post. Please give it a read/watch.

Love,

Keys to Freeze

After 8,000 miles of cycling, the only thing left in our way was one long frozen road…with a few final thunderstorms, some raging wildfires, a couple of testy truck drivers and one seriously pissed-off grizzly bear.

Our second to last post with Narratively is live! This is one of our favorites so please take some time to check it out. Jack Reakoff is a local legend north of the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Range. He lives off the grid in some truly harsh conditions and is a vocal advocate for keeping Alaska wild.

Just off the northernmost road in the United States there’s a village of thirteen hearty souls who live off the land, preparing for a frighteningly frigid winter and darkness that lasts all day.
