Something extraordinary is happening in the South Africa that most of the world knows nothing about.

Namaqualand transforms. Millions of wildflowers bloom across a landscape that spends most of the year looking like bare, arid scrubland. Orange, yellow and white stretching as far as the eye can see, following the sun as it moves across the sky. It lasts only a few weeks and the timing depends entirely on the winter rains.

It is one of the most spectacular natural events in Southern Africa and one of the least talked about. If you are planning a Cape Town trip this month, it is absolutely worth building in 🌸

This is one of those experiences I never tire of telling people about.

At Prince Maurice, breakfast is served on a floating platform in the middle of the lagoon. The water is so still in the early morning that the platform barely moves. The light at that hour is extraordinary. And the only sound is the Indian Ocean doing very little at all.

It is the kind of detail that sounds almost too good, until you are actually sitting there with your coffee going cold because you keep getting distracted by the view.

Have you ever had a meal in a setting so beautiful it was genuinely hard to concentrate on the food? 🌊

The Skeleton Coast is named after the whale bones that once lined its shores, left behind by the 19th century whaling industry. That history is still present in the landscape.

Shipwrecks half-buried in sand. Desert-adapted lions that have learned to hunt Cape fur seals along the shoreline. Fog rolling in from the Atlantic over terrain that looks like nowhere else on earth. Shipwreck Lodge sits right on the edge of it, and staying there feels genuinely remote in a way that very few places still do.

The desert-adapted elephants of Namibia are among the most remarkable animals I have ever encountered.

They have evolved over generations to survive in one of the harshest landscapes on earth, travelling vast distances across dry riverbeds in search of water and reading the land in ways that still astonish researchers. When they do find water, they cover themselves in mud as a practical survival tool. The mud acts as a natural sunscreen and keeps biting insects at bay, a simple but brilliant solution to living under the Namibian sun.

Watching a herd move silently through Damaraland at dusk, with the Brandberg mountain behind them, is one of those moments where you just stop talking entirely.
