Music therapy is transforming dementia care.

At the recent NHS Scotland event, our music therapist Harry Harris presented a compelling poster showing how music therapy is making a real difference on an older adult mental health ward.

From reducing stress and distress to boosting engagement and lowering medication use, Harry’s work highlights the powerful impact of non-drug interventions in dementia care.

📊 Findings from Harry’s study revealed:

✔️ 93% reduction in stress & distress
✔️ Increased patient engagement
✔️ Lower use of medication on music therapy days

We have an important request for any Music Therapists working in Scotland! We are currently running a short survey to help us map the Music Therapy workforce specifically in Scotland. If you could take a moment to participate, we would really appreciate your help.

We are keen to gather information on where all Music Therapists are working across Scotland, including both BAMT and non-BAMT members. The data obtained will help BAMT to support the Music Therapy community in Scotland as effectively as possible.

Take the survey here, it takes five minutes to complete: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7KY7HLY

Please share with any Music Therapy peers working in Scotland too!

Some lovely cards from P2 and P3 at Ness Castle Primary 💙
It was their world of work week this week and I went in to visit them to tell them all my secret :”I have the BEST job EVER”
I shared all about music therapy, who I work with and some of the tools I use for my job. And of course we played some music - they requested some Katy Perry and Taylor swift songs and we got playing!
Thank you for listening so well Ness castle primary 2 &3. I think there might be some future music therapists among you!

World music therapy week.
One of the facilities I provide music therapy is in the children’s ward in raigmore hospital. staff are so supportive of music therapy and you can even catch them dancing and singing along joining in! For some children it might mean short visits or coming in for different treatments but for some children it can mean long admissions and this is where real relationships can be built and music therapy can really be focused to support the child and their families for example as a distraction from procedures, emotional support and providing an creative outlet, helping reduce anxiety.
