According to a Eurostat report, "in the first half of 2023, guests spent around 237 million nights in EU short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms. This is a significant growth compared with 2022 (199 million nights; +18.8 %); with nights spent far exceeding pre-pandemic levels (193 million nights in 2019; +22.6%)"

If this is replicated for Scotland why are the industry professionals on social media groups not up in arms about monstrously unfair monopolistic OTA practices. The ongoing loss of direct business is arguably the greatest threat to our accommodation sector's future profitability and bottom line sustainability yet it barely receives a mention from our influencers when put up against Short Term Lets, Glass recycling schemes or LEZs. Why is that?

Rhetorical question.

Working at 2000ft, summer goes quickly here. We've noticed a change in the air as we head into September, in another month the stags will be roaring and the first snow on the high tops won't be far away, so it's time to start thinking about the season ahead.

At Glenshee our maintenance team have been working hard over the summer, most of the big jobs are done and we are now getting ready for the 2022/23 season, and looking to recruit staff for various roles at the ski centre.

As part of this recruitment and in addition to the normal seasonal roles we advertise, we are also looking to employ fulltime staff in our cafe team.

The ability to work as part of a small team, to be flexible and adaptable are key elements to all the jobs we have on offer and we would like to hear from anyone who is keen to work in the outdoors industry and looking to develop themselves into the posts we have on offer.

Nearly everything we do at every level is governed by the weather and this can put demands on our staff not experienced in a normal 9 - 5. As winter sports enthusiasts we think the rewards for the extra effort are worth it, and are looking for individuals who are resilient, adaptable and have a sense of humour.

We have current full time vacancies for;
Maintenance Operator
Chef/Cook
Catering Assistants

Seasonal roles which will commence in December include;
Lift Operators
Ski Hire Technicians
Ticket Office Assistants
Catering Assistants
Carpark and enviromental operators
Lunchtime Relief Lift Operators

Please see our website for role details and how to apply

How did we get to the stage that you had to join a club to then be balloted to get access to tickets to go to The Open Championship. Becoming a misnomer perhaps? Tie on that the economic impacts locally at some venues, are severely impaired by the once you're in you can't leave rules and I can't help but yearn for the less corporate version of golf's most historic event.

Sometimes I just read something in wonder. This is one of them. At what point did we have to explain that hospitality needs customer service to prosper? Have we really cone so freaking far down the road of just being an investment vehicle that we don't know what our business is about? Actually no I don't think so but even the fact that someone is getting paid to write this is just amazing! Or then again maybe it's because I'm so old!

So sad to hear that Rosemary Young, one of Plan B's longest clients, and more importantly a personal friend, died late last week. I think I first met Rosemary maybe 1999 when we were doing work with golf projects in Nairn and I stayed at the Claymore House Hotel. We provided booking engine and website support for the subsequent two decades for the hotel until sold and the Inveran just down the road.
Rosemary was indeed a character and no doubt she ripped a few strips off me in the early days! I regret, that because of COVID, I never managed to get up for a long overdue visit.
Our thoughts are with the family for their loss.

Simply put, Rosemary was loved by all who met her. With an indomitable spirit she took on every day with a zest and enthusiasm rarely seen. Her smile and love of life would light up a room. Her energy and stamina seldom matched. Her opinion was sought and welcomed by all those seeking astute and enl...
