Wildlife Croft Skye

Orange-tips are very common on the croft here. They have very simple requirements in order to thrive, with a diversity of native flowers to nectar on and stands of Cuckoo-flower or Ladies Smock plants allowed to flower and seed. Well managed livestock or cutting regimes are an excellent tool for creating the ideal habitats for this most beautiful of butterflies.

Chips, chips and more chips! Our own ramial chipped wood for the first time, mostly Alder, with a bit of Willow and Birch. This will make a super moisture-retaining and w**d suppressing mulch, all while slowly feeding the soil biology! This happy Bramley apple tree will hopefully have a great summer, regardless of the vagaries of the Scottish weather!

🐞 We’ve had some really exciting wildlife firsts this month! A male Black Grouse dropped in one Sunday afternoon, there’s been a Water Shrew, and this cool looking Spiked Shieldbug.

🐝 We’ve been quiet on Facebook recently, but we’ve both been keeping busy with lots of projects, including sprucing up Stonechat Bothy, making willow baskets, and growing native trees and fruit trees to sell.

🌄 We’ve also set up an instagram account just for Stonechat Bothy too!

🍏 Food has taken a bit of a back seat lately, but we did make a wee batch of apple and quince chutney, and a really delicious medlar crumble! We’ve a good supply of jam and potatoes to keep us going, and chard, kale and spring onions happily growing.
