The GI Trail Northern Ireland The GI Trail, a Heritage Lottery Funded project aims to map out all the sites at which the American GIs were based in N Ireland during The Second World War

The HLF funded GI Trail aims to map out the sites and locations at which the American GIs were based in Northern Ireland during the Second World War; it will research, develop, interpret, protect and promote these sites. The project will link in all the groups, local guides, visitor attractions and built heritage relating to that time. The GI Trail will create 3 separate heritage-tourism trails co

vering Armagh & Down, Antrim & Londonderry and Fermanagh & Tyrone. Each trail will document the sites and the stories, exploring the legacy the GIs left here in Northern Ireland. There will also be an interactive website with more detailed information to accommodate the Second World War enthusiasts - www.gitrailni.com

Thanks to US Veteran Teddy Dixon for supporting the GI Jive Festival and GI Trail over the past few years 🇺🇸🙌🏻 what an amazing man!

A massive thank you to the thousands of people who joined us in Kilkeel for GI Jive. We have lots of photos to share in the next few days, but we thought this summed up the atmosphere and sentiments of the day perfectly. Teddy Dixon WW2 veteran who served with the 42 US Infantry, enjoying the music, sun and memories.

On Wednesday 26th January we launched our second Trail - The Hartle Trail, covering the counties of Antrim and Londonderry. Mid and East Antrim BC very kindly hosted this event for us in the US Rangers Museum, Carrickfergus, marking the 75th Anniversary of US troops arriving in Belfast. We were joined by our good friend US veteran Teddy Dixon who served with the US Rainbow Division. Teddy, a Belfast man, is now 96 years old and he recalled some of his wartime experiences, including the liberation of Dacheau Concentration Camp. Thanks to the Northern Ireland War Memorial for inviting us to their lovely commemoration event yesterday at the Belfast Harbour Commissioners Office. We paid tribute to the US Troops who arrived in Northern Ireland on 26th January 1942 (75 years ago!) It was a great morning and the music from the Ulster Brass was amazing 🇺🇸

Today we remembered the arrival of American Troops in Belfast 75 years ago. Here is a snapshot of this morning's reception to commemorate this significant anniversary at the Belfast Harbour Office. With Belfast Harbour Wartime Living History Association Ulster Brass The GI Trail Northern Ireland
