Culloden House has been described as “one of the most attractive small country houses of its period in Scotland”.
In the days leading up to the Battle of Culloden in 1746, this grand estate served as Bonnie Prince Charlie’s headquarters. It was here he made his final stand in the Highlands, rallying the Jacobite army for a battle that would change Scotland forever.
Originally a 16th-century Jacobean castle, the house has seen centuries of change, from clan chieftains to wine-loving lairds. For nearly 300 years, it belonged to the Forbes family — including Duncan Forbes, Lord Chief Justice of Scotland, who played a key role in resisting the Jacobite Rising of 1745. After the Battle of Culloden, he pleaded for leniency toward the Highlanders, but his appeals were ignored. He died soon after, some say of a broken heart.
Culloden House was later transformed into the stunning Palladian mansion we see today, influenced by none other than Robert Adam, one of Britain’s greatest architects. From battlefield to ballroom, every corner of this house tells a story.
