We recently hosted our 10th Annual CPD Day with the Aspen Outdoors team, bringing instructors together ahead of the season and welcoming some new faces.

We started with our CPD meeting, giving everyone the chance to share their thoughts and experiences from the past year - thanks to all our instructors for coming along and contributing. This was followed by a team-building workshop where instructors worked through a tricky real-life DofE scenario, discussing how they would respond to situations like this in the field.

Afterwards we headed out to check one of our new Bronze DofE routes, walking from Linlithgow to The Craigs Campsite, passing Torphichen Preceptory and stopping at the viewpoint on Cockleroy Hill for some incredible views across West Lothian.

A brilliant day in the sunshine preparing for the season ahead.

Orkney isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience. Plan your next adventure with Aspen Outdoors to discover these five unforgettable sights that capture the true spirit of these remarkable islands:

1. Skara Brae
Step back 5,000 years at Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic village. Older than the pyramids and the Roman Empire, Skara Brae offers a tantalising glimpse into
prehistoric life; with stone homes, furniture, and passageways still standing strong against time.

2. Dramatic Landscapes
From towering sea cliffs to rolling green headlands and crashing Atlantic waves, Orkney’s landscapes are raw, rugged, and endlessly photogenic.

3. The Old Man of Hoy
This towering sea stack is one of the UK’s most iconic natural landmarks. Rising 137 metres from the ocean, it’s a bucket-list hike and a must-see for climbers, walkers, and lovers of epic coastal views.

4. Flora & Fauna
Nature thrives here. Spot puffins nesting on cliffs, seals lounging on quiet shores, and wildflowers brightening summer trails. Orkney is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts
and slow explorers alike.

5. Ring of Brodgar
Mystical, powerful, and unforgettable; this ancient stone circle rivals Stonehenge in size and atmosphere. Standing among these towering stones at sunset is something you’ll never forget.

Ready to explore history, wilderness, and wide-open spaces? Orkney is calling

When do you actually use ropework as a Mountain Leader?

It’s for safeguarding, managing steep ground, supporting nervous walkers, and making smart decisions when the environment changes.

Jen, one of our Directors at Aspen Outdoors, shares how ropework is really about keeping your group moving safely in the mountains.

The Italian hitch is a deceptively simple knot that earns its place when you need to belay someone up or down a short step, quickly and efficiently, with minimal faff.

It’s not about flashy systems. It’s about solid judgement, adaptable skills, and confidence when it matters, exactly what our new Aspen Ropework Course is built around.

Mountain Leaders, when it comes to ropework on the hills, everything starts with your anchor.

Size, stability, shape.
The rock you attach your rope to is the foundation of the entire system; and if that foundation isn’t right, nothing else matters. Good ropework isn’t just about knots and kit, it’s about critical judgement in real terrain.

Our new Aspen Ropework Mountain Leader Course goes beyond the basics, focusing on practical decision-making, safe systems, and choosing anchors you can truly trust on the slopes.

January feels long. The days are short, the skies are grey, and summer seems a lifetime away…

But we have something you can look forward to instead:
Sunlight dancing on Shetland’s cliffs, seabirds wheeling overhead. Warm island air and ancient stories unfolding across Orkney. White sands and turquoise seas in Barra, glowing under wide blue skies.

Watch the grey fade into colour, from winter gloom to island summer. When you’re ready, Shetland, Orkney and Barra are waiting.

Adventure starts with Aspen Outdoors, book via the link in bio.
