“It is unrivalled. There is nowhere else in Africa that can offer what we’re experiencing right now.”
That’s a bold statement.
We asked our Founder, Julian, to explain why he said it:
“It is bold, you’re right, and I had better explain it!
It starts with exclusivity. Botswana’s private reserves are huge and exclusive to the people staying in the camps there. That ramps up the price, but the reward for paying Africa’s highest price tag is unrivalled privacy. Nowhere else in Africa has private reserves anywhere near as big. Some reserves here are over three times larger than the entire Sabi Sands, and ‘The Sands’ has well over 40 camps. Here you’ve got just four!
The sheer quality of habitat. A truly pristine, unfenced ecosystem where big game moves as it has for hundreds of years, following routes embedded in their genes. Vast open skies, rivers, incredible sunsets – perfection in a big game ecosystem.
The sheer quality of game! This region is the centre point of approximately 250,000 elephants, the largest herds on Earth. Satellite data of ancient elephant pathways identified this exact spot as the location for DumaTau. Sit there from July to October, and you’ll see hundreds of elephants, likely over a thousand.
This area used to be ruled by the Army Boys. Split between Selinda and Linyanti, they were a coalition of six massive males in the prime of life.
The best camps offer a real range of activities: off-road driving, walking safaris, day and night game drives, incredible boat safaris, hides, sleep-outs. Huge value in that diversity.
Finally, DumaTau. One of my favourite properties on the continent, a genuine top three for me. Huge suites, private plunge pools, elephants swimming in front of your room, barbecues on boats as herds cross in front of you… with no one else around. Multi-award-winning, and it’s hosted some very famous travellers.
Blend it all together – ecosystem, reserve, wildlife, camp, activities, ultra-exclusivity – and I’ll argue this camp and this region are unrivalled for that depth of experience.”
