The Northumberland Coast Path. It's one of our favourite's here at Maximum Adventure, and we think it packs a punch. Why?

You'll be hugging this dramatic coastline for 62 miles from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed on the Scottish border as you walk a section of European wide North Sea Trail. With views you can't get enough of, castles like Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, fresh sea air and even fresher fish in Craster, we think it's one of the best UK long distance walks there is.

You can tick this off over 6 days or break it into smaller sections which are easily doable over a long weekend. Either way, we've got an itinerary that will work for you so you can focus on enjoying that fish and chips on the beach!

Field Notes: Summer colours on the trails๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป ๐ŸŒฟ

As spring inches its way toward summer, we're already looking forward to the changing landscapes on our hikes and bike rides. Here are some of our favourite summer flowers to keep an eye out for while you're on the trails ๐Ÿชป๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿšฒโœจ

๐ŸŒผ Gorse - helping to brighten up spring and summer with its splash of yellow, you can find gorse in coastal and heathland areas like the South West Coast Path.

๐ŸชปFoxglove - look for foxgloves with their tall purple bells in woodlands and forests.

๐Ÿฎ Cow parsley - possibly THE most English summer flower, you'll come across these frothy plants on lanes and hedgerows on most of our walks.

๐Ÿฅ€Heather - another one carpeting the moors and heaths, look for these softening the wilder landscapes of Yorkshire and the Peaks.

๐ŸŒท Common spotted orchid - probably the most likely wild orchid you'll see as they turn woodlands, dunes and marshes a delicate pale pink.

Do you have a favourite wild flower you're excited to see return to the trails? ๐ŸŒฟ

The West Highland Way. Is there another long distance hiking trail in the UK that is more iconic? We don't think so and the fact it's one of our most popularly holidays is proof that it is bucket list stuff!

Walking 96 miles from just outside Glasgow to Fort William in Scotland, this is a real adventure. You'll walk alongside famous lochs and glens, through rugged wild moorland and under the shadow of some of Scotland's most infamous mountains. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Whether you choose a leisurely pace of 9 days or sp*ed things up a bit on our 4 day extreme version, we've got an itinerary to make sure you get the best from this incredible landscape. And oh, we do a bike version too ๐Ÿšฒ

Field Notes: Navigation apps we love ๐Ÿคณ๐Ÿ—บ๐Ÿงญ

We always supply you with a map and a guide book for your adventure, but it's always a good idea to have more than one method of knowing where you are! Today we're sharing some of our favourite navigation apps so you can stay on track! ๐Ÿฅพโœจ

๐Ÿ“ Ordnance Survey is the OG map provider in the UK. With the whole of the country split into paper maps, their app and desktop means you can always have an OS map in your pocket.

๐Ÿงญ Komoot is one of our favourites. The community shares their routes and highlights along the trails, which means there's a wealth of inspiration if you're stuck for where to go on your next hike or bike ride.

๐Ÿ“ฑ All Trails is another option if you're more focused on hiking. Lots of the classic long-distance routes pop up on All Trails too, which is handy if you're following one of our popular trails.

โ˜€๏ธ What 3 Words is not strictly a navigation app, but the ability to pinpoint your location and share it with emergency services is a pretty important feature and helps to keep you safe out there.

Which one is your favourite?

Easter Egg Hunts, Grown-up Edition ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿฅพ

Who said Easter egg hunts are just for kids? With Easter on the horizon, look beyond the garden and set off on one our cracking adventures. The Cotswold Way takes you through some of the UK's most chocolate-box villages, or you could egg-splore further afield to the land of Belgium chocolate on our London to Brussels cycle trip.

Either way, you're guaranteed an egg-cellent adventure that will (almost) be better than an chocolate egg ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿซ Link for all our trips, concluding these ones, is in bio.

Field Notes: Tips to keep you safe on the trails

Heading out for a hike? Make you sure you've got the basics down of how to keep safe on the trails so you can adventure more! ๐Ÿฅพโœจ

๐Ÿ“ Know how to read trail markers - do you know your bridleway marker from a footpath marker? Mug up before you go so you can stay on track.

๐Ÿงญ Brush up on your navigation skills - knowing where you are is as important as knowing if there's a pub nearby. ๐Ÿบ We'll be covering more on navigation throughout this month so stay tuned for more hints and tips.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Fully charge your phone - Set off with 100% battery, a battery pack and a good old paper map so you can navigate and get help if you need.

โ˜€๏ธ Plan for plenty of daylight - Make sure you have enough time to hike the distance you've got planned, and always carry a head torch just in case!

๐Ÿ“ฌ Tell someone where youโ€™re going - Share your adventure plans with someone and make them jealous at the same time as keeping safe!

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Hike with friends or join a group - Even better, hike with friends to share the experience out on the trails!

Nature is great - keep safe so you can keep on adventuring! ๐Ÿ’š

Field Notes: How to get in shape for hiking and biking ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿšด

Trust us, getting out into the hills is a LOT more fun if you're not panting and cursing the whole way up (or down!) Here are a few tips for getting in shape for your next adventure ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ:

๐Ÿ’ช Strengthen key muscles - Stronger legs and core means longer, pain-free adventures. Hikers should do squats, planks and calf-raises, while cyclists can add in wall sits and push-ups.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Build endurance - Start small and gradually increase distance to build up to your your big adventure. Train on similar terrain and add weight to your backpack to replicate conditions.

โค๏ธ Get your heart racing! โ€“ Keep your heart strong with runs, cycling, or other aerobic workouts.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Plan your training โ€“ For hikes and rides that will be a challenge, as well as bigger events like the 3 Peaks Challenge, a structured plan keeps you on track.

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ Rest & recover โ€“ Stretch, hydrate, eat well, and listen to your body. And most importantly, rest when you need!

What do you do to train for the trails? We'd love to hear your tips and tricks!๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘ฃโœจ

Field Notes: Sustainability tips for the trail.๐ŸŒฟ

Exploring on foot or bike is already pretty eco-friendly, but hereโ€™s how to make your adventure even better for the planet ๐ŸŒ:

๐Ÿšฏ Leave no trace โ€“ Even natural waste like apple cores takes time to decompose! Take all rubbish with you and do a quick litter pick along the way.

๐Ÿš‚ Start as you mean to go on. Get to the start of your hike or bike ride as sustainably as possible, whether that's by bus, train or car share.

๐Ÿงฅ Shop wisely! Buy only what you need and opt for recycled materials. Lots of brands now offer repair programs and reusing instead of buying new is better for the planet! โ™ป๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿชง Stay on track โ€“ Stick to marked paths to protect delicate ecosystems and explore less popular trails on busy days to spread the impact around an area.

๐Ÿ’ง Refill & reuse โ€“ Bring a reusable bottle for refills along the way and for more remote spots try one with a built in filter.

๐Ÿงป Caught short? If you need to go in nature, p*e 30m away from a water source and dig a hole for number twos. Always take used loo roll with you.

๐Ÿ›’ Shop local! Shop in small businesses and invest in the local economy - it's a great way of giving back to an area.

What do you do to minimise your footprint on the trails? Drop a comment below! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘ฃโœจ

Field Notes: Finding slow moments and mindfulness on the trail.

Life can be pretty hectic, and getting out into nature on foot or bike provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and our friends and family. But how do you make sure you slow down and reset even on the trails? Here are some handy tips:

๐ŸŒฑ Focus on the detail. Did you know that looking at fractal plants like bracken and ferns are scientifically proven to lower our stress and increase our well-being. Next time you see one, have a think about what effect it has on you!

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธDo some yoga or breathing exercises. Take a break and slow down, immersing yourself in the sounds of the natural environment. Don't forget to have a good old stretch while you're at it to help soothe those muscles.

โš– If you're on a beach, try balancing some pebbles on each other. Concentrating on something like this, as well as the lovely feel of the stones in your hand, will bring you right into the present moment, and can help lower stress too.

๐ŸŽจ Count the colour. All landscapes are made up of hundreds of shades of green, blue, brown, pink, yellow...you get the gist. Next time you're munching on a sandwich, look around and count all the shades of one colour you can see.

Drop a comment ๐Ÿ‘‡and let us know how you like to decompress when you're out in nature ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒ„๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™‚

Welcome to Field Notes! This new series of tips and advice will be coming to you every Sunday, stuffed full of useful info for all your trail and bike needs.

First up, what to pack for a spring hike! We all know spring can deliver the most mixed weather of the year. So, keep yourself on track and make sure you pack these things in your rucksack.

๐ŸŒงRain jacket. In the UK, we would say this is pretty much an all-year round essential, but definitely in spring when showers can appear at any time. Stay dry, stay hike happy.

๐Ÿ•ถ Sunglasses. Make sure you can see the footpath signs when that bright ball of yellow makes an appearance!

โ˜•Thermos. Nothing beats a hot tea or coffee or even hot chocolate to celebrate getting to the top of a big hill!

๐Ÿ‘•Layers. On. off. On. Off again. Sounds like spring right? Make sure you have enough warm clothes but also things to keep you cool as you work up a sweat.

What else would you like to see some tips on?

We have come a long way!

Maximum Adventure has come a long way since it started on 16th May 2002 in a spare room.

It began through Mikeโ€™s love of adventure โ€“ and as a way of him getting out into the mountains. For the first few years that is what it did. It was an experience and adventure in running a business and in visiting the worldโ€™s great places. However, interest grew in the โ€˜productsโ€™ and the company began to grow into the business we are today. We now employ nine people in the office; have 100+ contracted guides and leaders with a wealth of experience and take thousands of people on adventurous activities every year.

The fundamental reason why we started remains the same: far too many people in the world want to do something adventurous but donโ€™t. Whatever the reason (and they all seem plausible when you need a reason): not enough time, something good on the television, oh โ€“ look, itโ€™s raining, there are always plenty of excuses. Our mission is to tell you that you should just do it; that life is for living and that you really can achieve so much when you just give it a try.

We take great satisfaction in providing adventures and challenges with people at the heart of them. We are immensely proud of being able to count many of the UKโ€™s biggest businesses and organisations as our clients but we are also delighted with every single challenge achieved by every single adventurer.
