82 years ago was D-Day.

Did you know:

Orcadians were highly valued as coxswains and commanders of the landing craft.

For instance, Kirkwall man Gerald Meyer born in 1908. Before the war, he worked in the printing department and bookshop of The Orkney Herald, and later worked in bookshops in London. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Navy, where he served on patrol vessels and destroyers before eventually commanding his own landing craft during the D-Day landings off Normandy

Gerry as he was known was also the editor of Britain’s first wartime forces newspaper ‘The Orkney Blast’.

Growing up surrounded by treacherous waters, many Orcadians had expert seafaring skills and naturally joined the Royal Navy or the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR).

WW II Museum New Orleans and shows landing craft and Allied troops arriving at Gold Beach during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. This was the sector where British troops, including the 51st (Highland) of which many were Orcadian men.

Exactly 110 years ago 20:30 HMS Hampshire a Devonshire-class armoured cruiser, carrying the Secretary of State for War, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener struck a German mine presumably laid by a U-boat sunk with the loss of 737 souls on board including Kitchener.

12 men survived. There have numerous conspiracy theories. In the 1920s the Kitchener Memorial was erected at Marwick Head to remember Kitchener and his men from the Hampshire.

‘Lest We Forget’.
