🥾🪨 SCRAMBLING — WHAT DO THE GRADES MEAN? ⛰️🔥

Ever heard someone say “It’s only a Grade 1 scramble” and wondered what on earth that actually means? 🤔

Scrambling sits somewhere between hiking and climbing — you’re still moving through the mountains, but you’ll often use your hands as well as your feet to negotiate rocky terrain. 👐🥾

Here’s a quick guide to the UK scrambling grades:

🟢 GRADE 1 — THE INTRODUCTION
A great starting point for anyone wanting to try scrambling. Expect steep, rocky terrain where you may need your hands for balance and some easy moves. There’s generally little or no exposure, but good route-finding and confidence on rock are important. Grade 1's can be pretty basic but with everything, they do carry risks. We will advise and talk to you on what we think you can do, giving you a full in depth overview of any Grade 1 route we do. However that said most of you are capable of a Grade one and most have done these on our hikes previously. Tryfan or Striding Edge are some of your classic Grade 1s FYI.

🟠 GRADE 2 — STEPPING IT UP
Things get more challenging! Expect steeper sections, more sustained scrambling and potentially some exposure. You’ll need to be comfortable using your hands and feet together, choosing your route carefully and dealing with more committing moves. This grading requires a head for heights and exposure and can be more mentally exhausting than physical but of course both go hand in hand. Terrain will be technical and we would advise only the competent to take part but again we would advise and support you every step of the way. Please note we DO NOT have any grade 2 hikes planned for 2027.

🔴 GRADE 3 — SERIOUS SCRAMBLING
Now we're getting into climbing territory. Grade 3 routes can involve steep and exposed rock, harder moves and sections where a fall could have serious consequences. Good scrambling experience, route-finding skills and appropriate equipment are essential — and depending on the route and conditions, a rope and climbing skills may be appropriate. This is for reference only and we DO NOT plan on rolling any Grade 3 events out.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Grades aren't an exact science. A scramble can feel very different depending on weather, rock conditions, route choice and your own experience. Wet rock, ice or poor visibility can turn an easy scramble into a much more serious challenge.

At Peakyfinderz, we love getting people out of their comfort zone — but knowing your limits and respecting the mountain always comes first.

🥾 Hiking Grades: Know What to Expect

Not every hike is the same, so we’ve introduced three grades to help you choose the right adventure for you in 2027.

🟢 MODERATE
A steady, enjoyable hike suited to those looking for a good day out on the trails. Expect consistent walking and some elevation, but no exposure or technical abilities are required. A great introduction to longer or hillier routes.

🟠 ADVANCED
Now we’re stepping things up! Expect more technical terrain, steeper inclines and a greater physical demand. There’s still no real exposure, but you should be prepared to work hard and be tested physically. Good fitness and confident footwork are recommended. Paths are usually clearly visible on these type of routes.

🔴 CHALLENGE
Just as the name suggests — this one will challenge you. Expect a longer hike that will test you physically and mentally, with elements of ridge walking, more demanding terrain and sustained elevation. These routes are for those who are comfortable pushing themselves and embracing a bigger adventure. We only run one of these a year.

⛰️ Whatever your level, there’s a trail waiting for you. Choose your grade in 2027, know what to expect, and come ready for an adventure! But as usual myself and Simon are on hand to guide you into what we feel is suitable for you. That said most of our members are more than capable of doing most of our 2027 events.

🥾🏔️ THE PEAKY FINDERZ 2027 PROPOSED SCHEDULE IS HERE! 🏔️🥾

2027 is shaping up to be a huge year of adventure for you Peaky Finderz — from relaxed winter walks and classic Peak District routes to some seriously epic mountain challenges across the UK.

We've put together our proposed 2027 schedule with a mixture of moderate, advanced and challenge-level adventures, including several multi-day trips which will include accomodation. Whether you're looking to build your confidence, develop your mountain skills or take on some of the UK's most spectacular peaks, there should be something for you. What we will be suggesting though to ensure some of these events go ahead is early buy in so we can get the accomodation at the early doors price over last minute price "hikes". There will be some that will not go ahead unless we hit the numbers so early reservation is key.

We will also be rolling out bi-monthly local walks in areas such as Clumber Park and The Wolds - will post out on this shortly but these are charity based and a good opportunity to attract more numbers without the hassle of driving hours to get together - low key is the vibes here.

📅 THE 2027 LINE-UP, EXACT DATES & PRICES TO BE CONFIRMED BUT THEY WILL ALL FALL WITHIN THESE MONTHS FOR YOU TO CHECK DIARIES. PEAKY PEAK CHALLENGE DATE AND PRICE RELEASED BELOW.

🌿 JANUARY – Lincolnshire
Tealby & Walesby Wolds Circular - DOG FRIENDLY
Moderate | 1 day

A great way to kick off the year with a beautiful day exploring the Lincolnshire Wolds. We will plan on heading to the Kings Head in Tealby afterwards for a bite to eat and a well deserved drink in front of the fire.

⛰️ FEBRUARY – Peak District
Kinder Scout Plateau - DOG FRIENDLY
Moderate | 1 day

A classic Peak District adventure and the perfect winter outing to warm you up to some of the more demanding hikes 2027 brings. This mild classic in the Peaks will certainly do this and never really dissapoints. Again ending with a nice drink and snack in the pub at the end.

🏔️ MARCH – Peak District
Edale Mini Skyline
Moderate | 1 day

One of the Peak District's iconic long-distance circuits — stunning views and a great spring challenge. We return to the Skyline to finish quarter 1s outings with the Mini Edale Skyline so we will be cutting it down slightly to start and finish in Edale but what a great finale to set things up for the more streunous walks we then have in stall.

🧗 APRIL – North Wales
Tryfan & The Glyders
Advanced | 2 days (Friday night & Saturday night)

We're heading back to North Wales for an epic mountain weekend featuring Tryfan, Glyder Fach, Glyder Fawr and Y Garn. Expect big mountain days, incredible scenery and plenty of adventure! Last years trip out here was one of those special few days so we expect this one to be booked up fast.

🏝️ MAY – ISLE OF SKYE
Isle of Skye Tour
Advanced | 5 days (includes 2 days travelling)

One of the year's BIG trips but not the biggest! We'll be exploring the incredible landscapes of Skye, including some of the spectacular Black Cuillin mountains, Bla Bheinn, Sgùrr, Sgùrr na Banachdich and the iconic Old Man of Storr. With the added visit to the Fairy Pools and other outrageously beautiful spots this weekend will be special.

🌊 JUNE – CORNWALL
Cornwall Coastal
Moderate | 4 days (Drive down on a Thursday & Return Sunday)

A fantastic coastal adventure exploring Cornwall's dramatic coastline, with spectacular cliffs, sea views and plenty of time to enjoy the South West. With places like Talland Bay Beach and Polperro this one is the wild card walk and being that and also accomodation prices, we may suggest this is a Peaky Finderz camping weekend however your feedback would be appreciated.

⛰️ JULY – LAKE DISTRICT
Helvellyn via Striding Edge & The Crags
Moderate | 2 days

Back with a bang is one of our favourite walks, a classic Lake District adventure taking on the legendary Striding Edge before heading into some of the area's finest mountain scenery. With day two covering 4 peaks including St Sunday Cragg and Fairfield on a quiet circular route.

☀️ AUGUST – BREAK

A well-earned break from the main schedule… although we'll still have plenty going on!

🏴 SEPTEMBER – SCOTLAND
PEAKY PEAK CHALLENGE - Thursday 9th September - Monday 13th September
Challenge | 5 days - £350 per person including 4 nights accomodation in luxury holiday lodge.

Another HUGE adventure! Our Scottish mountain challenge will feature Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête, Ben Macdui via Cairngorm and Braeriach. This is for those who want to try something that has not really been documented - the 3 highest peaks the UK has to offer - this is more elevation and more KM's than the well documented UK 3 peaks challenge. A rare opportunity to try this as a collective. This is definitely a special one that wont be repeated and is a true challenge of fitness, stregth and drive with lots of team work thrown in and some nice pub meals.

Accomodation will be at a large luxury lodge that will house the lucky 8 that get to book on so dont miss this one.

Four nights away, big mountains and an unforgettable experience.

🐕 OCTOBER – NORTH WALES
Moel Hebog & Nantlle Ridge
Moderate | 2 days (Friday & Saturday nights)

Back to Wales for a spectacular weekend combining Moel Hebog with the stunning Nantlle Ridge. These two days are defintely ones for those who would like to get into ridge walking as this is very straight forward. Subject to accomodation I would like to say this is dog friendly but will check once we know numbers.

🎄 NOVEMBER – BREAK

A quieter month before we round off the year…

🎅 DECEMBER – CHRISTMAS HIKE
Details TBC

Because no Peaky Finderz year would be complete without a festive adventure! 🎄🥾

🏔️ SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Our 2027 programme is designed to offer a real progression of adventures — from moderate one-day walks through to advanced mountain routes and our full-on five-day challenge trips.

And these are just our main events. We'll also be adding our less adventurous walks and additional activities throughout the year which we will announce shortly.

👥 Mountain adventures will be limited to a maximum of 10 people, allowing us to keep the groups personal, manageable and focused on everyone's experience and safety. We want the people coming to have that experience and anything more than 10 takes elements of this away. Plus we want to remain responsible and respectful to the communities we are visiting.

For the bigger trips, early commitment will be required to secure your place which will include a non refundable deposit against the full cost. This is primarily to allow us to book accommodation and organise the trips properly in advance.

To help us get ideas of numbers please comment on which ones you are interested in. We will be posting exact dates within the given months over the next few weeks.

So… which one are you putting in the diary first? 👀

2027 is going to be one hell of a year.

☕🥾 INTRODUCING PEAKY FINDERS SOCIAL WALKS! 🍻❤️
We know that not everyone wants to climb huge mountains, tackle mad challenges or spend all day battling the elements! 😂

So, we’re introducing something a little different…

From now on, Peaky Finderz will be running bi-monthly local social walks, designed to be relaxed, friendly and open to everyone.

Think good company, gentle walking, plenty of laughs and a chance to meet some fellow Peaky Finderz – without the pressure of a big mountain day.

📍 Locations will include places such as Clumber Park & the Lincolnshire Wolds, with more local areas to follow.

☕ COFFEE WALKS
Some walks will include a stop for a coffee along the route – because every walk is better with cake and caffeine! 😋

🍻 PUB WALKS
Others will finish with a well-earned pint and some food, giving us the perfect excuse to put the world to rights after a few miles.

❤️ AND HERE’S THE IMPORTANT BIT… IT’S ALL FOR CHARITY!
These walks will cost just £5 per person, with 100% of the proceeds collected throughout the year being donated to a chosen charity at the end of the year.
It’s a small contribution, but together we can turn a few casual walks, coffees and pints into something that makes a real difference. 🙌
So whether you're an experienced walker, completely new to hiking, or simply fancy getting out for a few hours and meeting some new people…
Come and join us!
No big peaks.
No crazy challenges.
Just good people, good walks and a good cause. ❤️🥾
📅 Bi-monthly social walks
💷 £5 per person, well behaved dogs welcome.
☕ Coffee stops / 🍻 pub finishes
📍 Local locations
❤️ 100% donated to charity
Peaky Finders – bringing people together, one walk at a time.
Keep an eye on our socials for the first dates and locations! 👀

Another step done in my quest to become a mountain leader. I made the decision that I will not rush this process for the sake of it as I want to take everything in (plus I do love my mountain days). The amount of time you have to dedicate to this is crazy but again I want to do more than is required. A quality mountain hour is only valid if the walk is at least 5 hours long and is in qualifying mountain terrain.

Just another 150 quality mountain hours to go and various other courses and assessments.

With safety at the forefront of everything we do I chose to do first aid in the wilderness early for added peace of mind. With groups I am risk averse to individual abilities and whilst we want you to achieve and push yourself, I have to primarily ensure safety is paramount as a group. 😊

See you in the Lakes next month!

Wasdale has many peaks to walk, mainly visited for the ascent up Scafell Pike however today a more quieter challenge was on the cards with The Pillar at 892m and it didn't disappoint all be it pretty windy towards the top but the views were mega. Had the added bonus of Rocket and his brother making the top and looking pretty happy with themselves 😊 Highly recommend this one!!

Great mooch in the Lakes with Rocket Dog that saw us take 4 peaks today. Dove Crag 792m, Hart Crag 822m, Fairfield 873m and St Sunday Crag 841m. Spectacular views of Windermere and Ullswater with a side on view of Striding Edge thrown in for good measure. Hardly a human in sight for the full 21km. Definitely one for another guided adventure sometime! Onto Wasdale for another mooch tomorrow.
