Feeling Grateful đ
I'm truly blown away by how lucky I am to host such wonderful guests. It's moments like these that remind me why I pour so many long hours and so much heart into running the Lodges.
Reading kind words like this makes it all worth it. Here's another great review...đ
"We are tempted to keep the secret of these lodges to ourselves as we know they will become more popular. What a spectacular location, a view we could look at endlessly and so much to explore in the area. Karen hosts the site as if it were her own and it shows in the meticulous attention to detail. We hope to come back again very soon".... Gordon & Mary from Cupar in Fife....
To all my amazing guestsâthank you. Your appreciation means the world. đ

With an enviable position on the untouched North West Coast, the lodges at Kylesku are where rustic hideout and timeless natural beauty entwine. A perfect location to explore the untamed wilderness with incredible beaches, hidden waterfalls and wildlife on your doorstep. The dramatic range of Quinag...

"Last nightâs sunset over Quinag was absolutely breath taking â Iâve never seen them look so stunning."

Just two weeks after his stay in Quinag (formerly known as The Wee Hideout), one of our loyal guests, John, returnedâthis time to experience White Cairn, the newest addition to our idyllic retreat. We think his review speaks for itself.
White Cairn is Exceptional.....
Kylesku lodges are in a very special location, accessible yet each with breath taking views from the balconies and a feeling of being completely amongst nature. I have been returning here for many years... I especially love the gentle sunsets across the bay, the ever changing scenes of the Quinag mountain peaks.
This year 2025 something new and exciting caught my eye... a new lodge White Cairn opened for bookings at the start of May... on impulse I booked it arriving 2 weeks later! So how does it compare?
White Cairn really is exceptional. It is spacious, very comfortable, with large windows that frame magnificent scenes of the bay and the Quinag mountains, drawing the landscape into the rooms. The lodge is on two floors and is newly furnished to a very high standard. The upper floor houses a luxury king bedroom, with a separate dressing room and a large en-suite, whilst the second bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor. The open plan lounge/diner/kitchen is spectacular with an impressively large window for watching the bay and it's dreamy sunsets. The lounge also features an outsized log burner which is a cozy luxury for cooler days. The high spec kitchen hosts a Rangemaster cooker, dishwasher, tall fridge-freezer, a suite of plush appliances, plus a small separate room with a washer/dryer. Separate patio doors frame the mountains to the south, leading onto a generous terrace looking straight out over the bay (bring sunglasses in case of clear skies!) The terrace is a sun trap sheltered on three sides and I was lucky enough to enjoy this for many hours during the May heatwave. If the weather is inclement, the views from the rooms are still wonderful, often with surprises... if you are lucky you may see one or more eagles trying to hover against the wind!
White Cairn is a few hundred pounds more a week than I am used to in the other John Muir Trust lodges at Kylesku which are themselves excellent, but in short I found it more than worth it... a real oasis of utter luxury in the Assynt wilderness that is almost impossible to beat.
What is my best tip? Try hard to plan your days out, as if you don't, you simply won't want to leave the lodge.

How did we end up here?
With our two girls all grown up and our first grandchild en route, we decided in October 2015, rather impulsively, to search Google for campsites for sale. Up came âKylesku Lodgesâ and a stormy visit to the site a month later. We were blown away by the view and saw an opportunity to update the lodges with our eye for creativity and design. The pull of the âfriendliest hotel in Scotlandâ only a short walk away, and the chance to build a home and live in the wild weather of Sutherland, was just too intriguing to walk away. So we sold our flat and moved up from Edinburgh in July 2016, where Mike worked as a joiner and I was studying Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art.
As we approach our fourth season, we feel very fortunate to have met so many colourful and enthusiastic guests and been welcomed into the local community, with gifts of venison, lobster, gin and laughter. We've welcomed families, single travellers, groups of friends, celebrated artists, actors, film crews, groups of divers, photographers and walkers and the highlight of 2019 - our first wedding! There have been times where we have missed our family so much it hurts, but when they visit we climb hills, discover hidden waterfalls, walk along empty beaches and go out on our wee boat looking for seals and otters.
At heart we are problem solvers, we love the shape of the lodges but feel they would fit into the landscape better if clad with Scottish Larch. So we are aiming to have as many of the fronts of the lodges (that the weather allows) larched by Spring 2020.
Another exciting addition is the opening of Cath's studio/shop in April 2021. Since leaving Art School she was awarded a grant from Highlands & Islands Enterprise to develop her knitted blankets, cushions and scarves for use in the lodges. These will be available for sale from her studio and through her website, Cove (www.covedesign.net).
We want to share this amazing place with you and we hope you will come with your family, your friends or just yourself. Come and explore, breathe the freshest of air, switch off your phone and enjoy all the wildlife, views, hidden treasures and fabulous food. See you soon, Cath and Mike and the wandering sheep and stags (our live in neighbours)
