A thirteen-day tour is gradually drawing towards its conclusion.

We have already covered so much ground, and there are still four full days of touring left to go.

Bradley Bell came to me and asked whether I could give him and his wife, Tina, a dream bespoke tour of his ancestral lands—the lands of the Border Bells. I agreed.

Then he asked whether I could take them on a whirlwind adventure around Scotland, fitting in as much as possible.

I took a deep breath and accepted the challenge.

Months of preparation and careful planning followed. Then crunch time arrived. I saddled Pulteney, welcomed Brad and Tina aboard, and off we went.

From castles and battlefields to ancestral lands, dramatic landscapes, whisky, railways, legends and stories, this has been a true Scottish adventure.

I love being both a guardian and a guide. ArmstrongTours is built on honesty, history, stories, legends and myths.

The memories and stories Brad and Tina take home with them will last a lifetime.

One final mission remains: the ancestral lands of the Bells and Blair Athol Distillery.

Once that mission is accomplished, I can rest assured that I have done my job—and given them the Scottish adventure they dreamed of.

Every tour has its own personality. Every tour tells a different story.

No two ArmstrongTours are ever the same. I tailor each journey differently, adding something unique every time, because history isn't meant to be experienced from a script.

Since launching ArmstrongTours in 2018, I've had the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. Every guest brings their own story, their own questions, and their own connection to the Borders.

Have I finished? Hell no. I'm only just warming up.

I've watched children become fascinated by the Border Reivers, calling them "badass," only to discover that they themselves are of Border stock.

I've met people who arrived believing they had no connection to the Borders, only to leave knowing exactly where they belong.

I've helped fill the missing pieces in family histories, connecting generations with their ancestors and bringing forgotten stories back to life.

As a freelance guide, something special often happens. Guests arrive as customers, but many leave as friends, and some become part of the ArmstrongTours family for life.

A tour i will remember for a long time.
The tours I enjoy most are the ones with no fixed plan.

Yes, you heard that right.

When visitors climb into my car and say, "Go, Reiver, go... surprise us!" I know we're about to have an adventure.

That's exactly what happened with John and Maria Castells Elliott. They asked me to take them on a journey through Reiver Country, with a special focus on the Elliotts.

Together we explored the landscapes, history, and stories that shaped one of the great Border Reiver families.

Our adventure included:

📍 Hermitage Castle

Ride through history with us.
You're standing in Langholm Market Square, admiring the old Town Hall while waiting for the local tour guide.

You feel the temperature suddenly drop as great, gentle clouds of mist begin to swirl and swim around you.

Your ears prick up as you suddenly hear the clip-clop of horses' hooves striking the tarmac. Your senses heighten.

"Who goes there?" you shout, noticing your heartbeat has quickened.

The mist parts, revealing the shadowy outline of a horse and rider. Another appears... then another... until a band of mounted figures emerges from the veil, their cloaks billowing gently in the morning breeze.

At their head rides a lone figure upon a magnificent black horse. He reins in before you, his piercing eyes studying your face beneath the broad brim of his weathered hat. A long cloak hangs from his shoulders, a sword rests at his side, and a smile slowly creeps across his face.

"Fear not, traveller," he says in a broad Border Scots accent. "Ye stand upon Armstrong ground. I am the Lone Reiver, and beyond these mists lies a journey through the bloodiest frontier Britain has ever known."

With a flourish, he removes his hat and bows.
"Come then. Mount up. Today we ride through the Mists of Time."

One by one, the mist begins to lift, revealing the streets of Langholm once more. Before you stands not a ghost, but your guide, smiling warmly.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," he says. "My name's Adam, and welcome to ArmstrongTours."
