🌞🇨🇾 Our final official day of touring on the fantastic Newmarket Holidays and Leeds Bradford Airport Northern Cyprus Fam Trip took us to the historic city of Famagusta, and what a memorable day it was! 🇨🇾🌞
Our first stop was the incredible Ancient Salamis, one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus. Founded, according to legend, by Teucer after the Trojan War, the city has been home to Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian and Roman civilisations over thousands of years.
Walking amongst the ruins was like stepping back in time. Highlights included the impressive Gymnasium with its grand colonnades, the beautifully restored Amphitheatre, the Roman Baths and the fascinating Royal Tombs. It’s easy to imagine just how magnificent this city would have been in its heyday.
In the afternoon we visited the famous “Ghost Town” of Varosha. During the early 1970s, Varosha was one of the world’s most glamorous holiday destinations, attracting celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Brigitte Bardot. Following the events of 1974, the area was abandoned and remained untouched for decades. Seeing the deserted hotels and streets frozen in time was both fascinating and incredibly moving.
We then finished the day with a wander around the beautiful walled city of Famagusta, soaking up the atmosphere, browsing the local shops and enjoying a very well-deserved ice cream! 🍦😋
This trip has truly opened my eyes to the beauty, history and hospitality of Northern Cyprus. From stunning landscapes and fascinating historical sites to friendly locals and fantastic value for money, it has been an unforgettable experience.
A huge thank you to Newmarket Holidays, Leeds Bradford Airport and our wonderful guide Honor for making this trip so special. ❤️✈️🇨🇾
