Fantastic Feasts and Where to Find Them 133
Batanga York's cosy restaurant brings the flavours of Mexico to York's Fossgate...
We started our Mexican feast with nachos, and these are 'nacho' (not your, works better said than written!) average tortilla chips. Rather than corn crisps, expect actual triangles of tortillas - thin, crispy and smothered in melted cheese, garlic sauce, gaucamole and jalapenos. Easily the best nachos we've had, and a mammoth portion for Β£10. Guac and roll!
My Pollo Hermano was anything but fowl. Lime chicken, sweetcorn, red onion, jalapeΓ±os, cheese, sour cream and rice - and packed with flavour. Not one to chicken out on, Batanga know how to do flavours well, and there are levels of heat for all tastes.
Mrs Wizard had the beef brisket rice bowl - with tender beef, cheese, guacamole, salsa, jalapenos, lettuce and sour cream. Hearty, filling and oh so good!
For smaller appetites there are also one individual tacos with all sorts of enticing fillings, plus corn ribs, jalapeno poppers and more. For a small premises, the menu has plenty of options and it was great to see it packed on a grey week-night.
The menu boasts an impressive range of cocktails too, with many on offer at just Β£5 each. Mrs Wiz went for the Dragonfruit - vivid pink and sweet but not sickly. I had the El Diablo; a warming hit of Chambord raspberry liquer, Jose Cuervo tequila, lime juice and ginger beer. Diab-ollically good, it could be my new favourite cocktail.
As the evening drew on, I went for the El Chupacabra - a potent blend of three types of rum, tequila and absinthe. Boy did it pack a punch. There are classic cocktails too like the Pina Colada or Mojito, and Margaritas with optional spice.
Our first visit, but we'll be back quicker than you can say Quesedilla!
