Hidden near Egypt’s southern border lies one of the ancient world’s most breathtaking wonders — Abu Simbel. Built over 3,000 years ago by Pharaoh Ramses II, this colossal temple complex is a jaw-dropping tribute to Egyptian history, carved directly into a sandstone cliff.

But did you know Abu Simbel was almost lost forever?

In the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam threatened to flood the site, a massive international rescue operation led by UNESCO saved it.
