Over the summer we decided to grow some turf for Preschool’s garden. First, the children filled trays with soil using small spades to scoop and fill the planting trays. We used lots of language to talk about planting, scooping, soil, water seeds and sunshine.

We watered the grass seeds each day and watched as the seeds turned in to very small blades of grass. The children talked about how the grass was growing and what it needed to help it grow.

When the grass was grown, the children helped collect soil from the soil storage and carried it through to the garden where they took turns to level out the ground. Meryl then came to help the children lay their freshly grown turf in the garden.

We then decided to begin the process again to grow more grass for our garden.

The children have been developing their understanding of the world as they begin to understand the effect of light and water on the natural world around them.

In the garden, the children initiated their own spider hunt singing “We’re going on a spider hunt, we’re going to catch a big one”. Maria asks “I wonder where we might find them…”. The children said “webs!” We looked in trees, in the mud, under the bushes and on the tyres, where we finally found one and lots more insects! These are some of the children’s voices as we searched the garden.

💬 We look in here… this is mud

💬 I found a web

💬 I found a spider

💬 It’s on top

💬 It fell down with the rain drop

💬 I found a slug.. do want to stroke it.. nice and gentle.

💬 Do you want ice cream.. it’s wiggly worm ice cream with spiders

💬 I got 3

💬 You can have the big one

Family Fun Day.

We invited the children and families into our nursery for a summer end of term fun session. We had lots of messy and creative activities available for children to enjoy with their parents indoors and outside.

We had lots of fun exploring the gardens, the new large sand pit had hidden animals and dinosaurs in it to find and the sun was shining, particularly in the courtyard.

The children all had a drink, biscuit or bun, and had a turn on the tombola.

In preschool this week we have had lots of fun searching for mini beasts, being very careful as we looked under lots of different things. The children found spiders, worms, slugs and snails placing them in pots. They used lots of language to talk about what they could see and were very excited. The children showed lots of focus in their exploring as they talked about what they could see. The children showed their skills as they shared with peers and managed big feelings whilst searching for mini beasts.

2-3s yoga.

The children in 2-3s love their weekly yoga sessions, this week our theme was butterflies! We started with a warm up to wake up our bodies, before we sat down together to read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Throughout the book we would regularly stop and replicate some of the images we saw through our yoga poses. We scrunched up small like a caterpillar egg, stretched our legs and backs to make us look like a wiggly caterpillar and even pretended to be a piece of watermelon from the story! At the end of the book we saw the hungry caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly, so we waved our arms like wing and flew around the room like butterflies. To wind down the session we sat together and sang “twinkle twinkle little star” before ringing the yoga bells and saying “namaste”

The children in preschool have had lots of fun in the garden playing mathematical games. They have used a variety of sorting objects, tweezers and pots. All the children managed their big feelings as they shared took turns while creating patterns.

The children used lots of mathematical language, talking about more, less, lots, more than, some, big, bigger, small while also using lots of number language.

The children developed their small tooth skills while using the tweezers and their thumbs and forefingers to select and place the different objects.

Childs voice.

“Its big”.

“Got red ones”.

“These are blue, I’m doing yellow next”.

”can you see my pattern”.

”look you do it like this”.

”there’s 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 in a line, I got a pattern now”.

”I got all the yellow ones, oh look more yellow ones” pointing to the pile.

THis one is a train and dinosaur, I need another train”.

“Look there are lots and lots”.

Mark making.

The children had lots of fun this afternoon drawing on the large pieces of paper. We made lots of up and down marks with the pencils and then we made some round and round marks. The children were developing their motor skills by drawing both big and little marks on the paper. They are gaining the skills they need to become motivated writers through drawing freely.

In under twos we have had a very busy morning. We enjoyed playing in the water filling and emptying containers as well as washing our hats!!! We also showed lots of interest in some insects we found. We watched as the ants crawled across the courtyard and we also found a spider in the book box. We reached out our hands to touch them but when they moved we quickly moved back away from them laughing. Beth went into two to threes where she found some ladybirds. She brought them over to us and we looked at them. Over the last few weeks we have noticed some blackbirds flying in and out of the bushes in our play area. Linda cut some branches today to put in our dinosaur area and she saw a nest with two baby birds in. Linda took some pictures and showed them to the children. We are exploring our environment and becoming carers in our environment as well.

Our new sand pit! 🏖️🪣

We have a new sand pit in the 2-3’s garden and the children are loving it! They couldn’t wait to take their shoes and socks off and engage in sensory play. We have been building lots of sandcastles; filling and pouring using different tools and containers. The children are developing their fine and gross motor skills to dig and transport the sand. We are also developing our sharing as we take turns to use the sand resources.
