Middleham Open Stables Day has become somewhat of an Easter tradition in The Dales.
Many of the 15 stables located in the village open their doors to visitors for this annual event, including Johnston Racing originally headed by the renowned Mark Johnston and now by his son. With literally hundreds of horses calling the village home it really is a sight you don’t get to see often. and one not to miss even if you aren’t a racing fan.
In addition to the stables being open, the village and surrounding area is rammed with activities, exhibitions and stall holders from delicious food to country attire and garden equipment. Quite a mix!
It is all exceptionally well organised with shuttle buses running from Leyburn for easy parking should you need them and a timetable of events to choose from.
But don’t just leave it at that. You have some other great options to see in the immediate area of Middleham.
To start you have Middleham Castle, of Richard the Third fame. It is well worth the trip to Middleham for that alone.
If you haven’t been, consider the Forbidden Corner, it’s honestly not just for children! The Forbidden Corner is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created within a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park. It has to be seen to be believed. BUT you can only visit with pre booked tickets so head to their website to reserve yours.
You will be heading through Leyburn to us so don’t miss the Good Friday market and a trip to our absolute favourite Campbells, a speciality grocer. Head upstairs and choose a special bottle of your favourite tipple from their vast collection and later pop it in your in-room fridge at The House at Hawes to enjoy over your long Easter weekend. They are sure to have some delicious Easter treats to go with your tipple too, yum. Also in Leyburn take a look around Tennants Auction House, many enjoy lunch in their Bistro. Or head to Inspired Chocolate or the teapot factory on the business park. Oh and don’t forget The Wensleydale Brewery and The Wensleydale Spirit Company, all in Leyburn.
What a day to be had! That's an action packed day before you even get to us! If it sounds like the start of a good weekend to you head to our website and book your stay, we have a couple of rooms remaining and don’t forget you save 25% on Sundays when you book your long weekend.
