A crisp lunchtime wander in the winter chill! Cannock Chase is especially beautiful this time of year, but be sure that you do not stray from the woodland path...

Besides the obvious dangers of abandoned pit shafts, the forests of the Chase are practically packed with paranormal spooks and cryptids. The list is said to include (but is not limited to):
- black eyed children that lure you into the underbrush
- a mysterious pig man who runs alongside your car (nope)
- a large black puma
- ghost hitch hikers
- ghost WWII soldiers
- ghost miners
- ghost pirates (??)
- grey figures that flit between the trees
- UFO sightings
- werewolves

Regrettably I met none of these things, but I did have a nice crunchy walk! Huzzah.

In 300AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered the ex*****on of 1000 Christians. These unfortunate martyrs are said to have been murdered north of the city, in an area now called Christian Fields...

Might this grim history linger in the city's name? In his famous dictionary, Samuel Johnson defined 'lich' as a Saxon word for carcass, and even mentioned his beloved birthplace: "Lichfield, the field of the dead, a city in Staffordshire, so named from martyred christians". Given the city's ghoulish history, it would make a lot of sense for this to be 'the field of corpses'...

(more likely 'lich' is derived from Letocetum, the name of a Roman village nearby meaning 'grey wood' but shhhhh.)

Have you ever hopped over the Sherbrook stepping stones in Cannock Chase? On sunny days families and dog walkers gather to enjoy the scenery, but few people realise where these stones came from...

In 1956, the Friends of Cannock Chase committee made a purchase: twelve 100lb rocks to create a whimsical river crossing. The twist? These smooth, hewn rocks were salvaged from the demolished hangman's gate at Stafford Gaol. It was above these very stones that convicted criminals had taken their final drop...

Something to think about on your next autumnal wander! No wonder Cannock Chase is said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain...

Join my next ghost walk on 28th October for more spooky Staffordshire tales!

Samuel Johnson stands sentinel over Lichfield market square, surrounded by a busy hubbub of library visitors and produce stalls. The market square is the site of some of the most harrowing events in Lichfield history... join a ghost walk on the 28th of October to take a macabre step back in time.

The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum has delightfully spooky offerings of its own! Head over on the 25th of October for a grisly face to face encounter with an 18th century surgeon, or settle down on the 29th for terrifying tales with Christine Genders. Creepy curiosities galore!

Lichfield City train station as we know it today was built in 1882, replacing the original brick building after a new route to Sutton Coldfield was created. You can still spot 1800s features whilst waiting on the platform!

That said, it may be safer to keep your eyes down. Something sinister is said to lurk between these traintracks....

To find out more, join me on a ghost walk around Lichfield's haunted streets! There are still tickets left for the 28th October and 1st November, but they are selling out fast...
