Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 14/15 - Today was The Eagle's Nest - 6000 ft above sea level. This was an extravagant Tea House built for Hi**er who rarely used it because he wasn't keen on heights...rather an oversight on the part of Martin Börmann who ordered its construction! This was not his house as I heard so many dullard tour guides explain to people today. Quite astounding.

From there we went back down to the Obersalzberg and visited the excellent Dokumentation Centre and part of the huge underground tunnel and bunker network that stretched for miles around the area. Then various sites including the Hotel Zum Turken which was the SS/SD HQ used by Hi**er's personal bodyguard directly behind his house The Berghof, which we also visited the site of. Entrances to various bunkers, guardhouses, the tunnel where the looted artworks were later found and then the 'Little' Reich Chancellery (with Eagle still above the entrance minus the sw****ka) which was used when Hi**er was in residence. This was a secondary Reich Chancellery to Berlin so that government business could be attended to without interruption.

A very interesting day with some heavy overtones - well that's it folks! End of the tour and travel back tomorrow. A truly excellent couple of weeks following the route my guests father took in

Hope you've enjoyed the posts ☨

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 13/15 - The Munich Rise of the Third Reich Tour is by far one of my favourites. This morning we walked the streets of Munich where many of the buildings are still standing from when Hi**er first spied on the DAP (German Workers Party) up until he eventually takes it over and renames it the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers Party). The Bierkellers, the hotels, the party offices and the parade grounds. Buildings where the SA and the SS were formed and where senior officials first began plotting the rise to power.

We followed the route of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch which led to Hi**er's arrest and imprisonment. The Martyrs of the Putsch, the Blood Flag and the memorials and events that followed.

We discussed Kristallnacht, The Night of the Long Knives and degenerate art, music and literature and visited the site of the Munich Book-Burning in May 1933. Brutalist architecture and where Hi**er had his offices, where he lived and where he took tea.

During the afternoon we headed into the Alps and visited Berchtesgaden old town and viewed murals painted during the 1930s. A very interesting day which led to some lively discussion.

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 12/15 - On the 82nd Anniversary of today I conducted a tour of the Dachau Concentration Camp. It brought the whole campaign into focus - this is what those brave men were fighting for all those hundreds of miles away on the beaches of . Freedom and Liberty. Met many of the men over the years, now sadly passed, but I will never forget those moments or those men. This is exactly why I continue to do this.

One of the photos here shows the Memorial Plaque for Noor Inayat Kahn, Madeleine Damerment, Yolande Beekman and Eliane Plewman who were murdered just hours after their arrival into the Camp Prison Block having been previously deported from France where these brave SOE agents had been captured. Incidentally, 'Liberté' was the last word that Noor spoke, just moments before she was shot in the head.

Other photos show some famous stills that Lee Miller took as the camp was liberated and just hours before she herself was photographed in Hi**er's Munich apartment - the famous photo of her naked in Hi**er's bath with her dirty boots worn earlier at Dachau in the foreground.

Another shows the cell where Georg Elser was imprisoned - Elser was the man who planted the bomb in the Bürgerbraühaus which nearly killed Hi**er on 8 Nov 1939.

These are tough places to visit, and for my clients whose father entered the camp and took some frankly horrific photographs on 2 May 1945, it was even more emotional.

We also visited a Stolpersteine in the town of Dachau of Albert Vettermann who was murdered as part of the Aktion T4 programme which plunges to even deeper depths.

In Munich now ready for a tour that I conduct on foot tomorrow about the Rise of the Third Reich. It's heavy going but so important to understand.

Peace.

Luxembourg American Cemetery. These men are part of the 'Greatest Generation' and 5074 lay at peace here after fighting to liberate Europe from fascism. RIP.

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 11/15 - Nuremberg.
Today we visited Courtroom 600 in Nuremberg made famous by hosting the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal from 1946-49. The courtroom was used for many years after the trials but is now no longer used and preserved. The excellent museum upstairs takes the visitor through the events of the time which evokes a profound effect. I've been here many times but it always hits home how twisted war really is. Take heed.

Afterwards we went to a temporary exhibition nearby which was absolutely exceptional, based on the People's Court set up by the N**i Party in 1934. The history of this horrendous (legal???) organisation was told using accounts of individuals involved in every way and how it worked in practice. Utterly demoralising particularly given what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic right now - the similarities are really quite frightening.

Tonight we are in Dachau in preparation for the camp tomorrow. My client's father was one of the first into the camp on 2 May 1945 and took photographs which we have with us. It's going to be another rough day emotionally. I first entered the camp in 1979 but doesn't matter how many times you enter through those gates - it hits you hard. More tomorrow. Peace.

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 10/15 - Travel Day today but we paid our respects at the Luxembourg American Cemetery where General Patton lays in peace. Got to Nuremberg in good time to have a look around the Old Town, visit the Human Rights monument and eat some of the famous Nuremberg sausages which I must add have won multiple sausage awards over the years!!

The M22 Locust could be landed onto the battlefield by Hamilcar glider during and was used by the British 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions. An interesting little fella...this one is in the Bastogne Barracks along with a large collection of other military vehicles...all of which are in running order.

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 9/15 - Clients' father was encircled during the siege of in 1944 so today we visited the sites where he spent those terrible days. Lots of stops but also managed two quality museums - the Bastogne Barracks and the 101st Airborne museum.

The 101st Airborne museum Bastogne has always been one of my favourite museums - it's one of those places where you can properly feel the history. Dioramas are not really my cup of tea but these are excellent because of the outstanding mannequins which are custom made by an artist. The Bastogne Barracks speaks for itself - if you're into armour you'll love it!

Travel day tomorrow - into Germany and Nuremberg awaits.

Bletchley Park to Eagles Nest Tour - Day 8/15 - Today we followed Kampfgruppe Peiper through the northern sector of the Battle of the Bulge. I particularly enjoy this tour which delves into some heroic blocking actions by the American 99th and 30th Infantry Divisions. The 'Old Hickory' (30th) are a personal favourite as they were involved in some of the heaviest actions of 1944 and 1945 and always performed well in my opinion. The 82nd Airborne also tend to get overlooked in the Ardennes for some reason but their participation was crucial.

The Belgian Resistance always gets mentioned on this tour as well as although the actions took place a good while before the winter of 1944 they are well worth mentioning as we pass.

An excellent day and in Bastogne this evening ready for tomorrows tour around the town and the immediate countryside.
