Super exciting.
Big news out of Europe this week — and it could mean MSC Group is about to enter one of the fastest-growing segments in cruising. 🚢🌊
According to a report from Italian maritime publication Shipping Italy, MSC Group is reportedly evaluating a MAJOR new project: launching European RIVER CRUISES under its Explora Journeys luxury brand.
⚠️ IMPORTANT — this hasn't been confirmed by MSC yet. It's currently in the early evaluation stage. But if the reports are accurate, it would be one of the biggest cruise industry expansion stories of the decade.
⚓ WHAT'S REPORTEDLY BEING CONSIDERED
According to the report:
🚢 MSC Group is studying the European river cruise market
✨ The project would launch under Explora Journeys (MSC's LUXURY brand, not mainstream MSC Cruises)
🌊 Possible rivers include the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Douro, Elbe, and Italy's Po
📊 Currently in evaluation stage — no ship orders, no timeline, no launch details announced
If MSC moves forward, Explora Journeys would compete directly with established luxury river operators like Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, and Scenic.
🌍 WHY EXPLORA JOURNEYS FITS RIVER CRUISING
Explora Journeys was launched in 2023 as MSC's premium/luxury ocean brand. The brand is already positioned for:
🍾 Included premium drinks
🍴 Fine dining across multiple restaurants
🛏️ All-suite luxury accommodations
🌊 A relaxed, refined onboard atmosphere
✈️ Included shore excursions and inclusive packages
Those are basically the SAME elements luxury river cruise lines are known for. So Explora Journeys entering river cruising isn't a stretch — it's actually a natural extension.
🌎 THIS IS PART OF A BIGGER INDUSTRY TREND
MSC/Explora wouldn't be the first ocean cruise line to eye the river cruise market:
⚓ NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE recently acquired a majority stake in Riverside Luxury Cruises
⚓ CUNARD announced its own river cruise plans
⚓ Multiple ocean lines are viewing river cruising as their next growth opportunity
📈 River cruise demand has boomed post-pandemic
🏆 US News & World Report launched its FIRST-EVER river cruise line rankings this year
Ocean cruise brands see the profitable, growing river cruise market and are increasingly wanting a piece of it.
🚢 EXPLORA JOURNEYS'S MASSIVE EXPANSION
Even without river cruises, Explora Journeys is investing €3.5 BILLION in fleet expansion:
⚓ Explora I — already sailing
⚓ Explora II — already sailing
⚓ Explora III — August 2026 debut
⚓ Explora IV — April 2027 debut
⚓ Explora V — 2027 (debuting with Asia itineraries)
⚓ Explora VI — 2028
Adding a river cruise fleet on top of that ocean expansion would make Explora Journeys one of the biggest luxury cruise investments in the industry.
🌊 WHY RIVER CRUISING IS DIFFERENT
For anyone who's only ever cruised on the big ocean ships, river cruising is a completely different experience:
🚢 Ships are MUCH smaller (typically under 200 guests)
🏛️ You sail RIGHT INTO cities and small towns — often within walking distance of main attractions
🍽️ Fewer restaurants and venues, but higher quality
🎭 No waterparks, no big casinos, no production shows
🌅 The river and the ports ARE the entertainment
🍷 Onboard atmosphere is relaxed, refined, and social
🏰 Every day is essentially a "port day"
It's a slower, more intimate style of cruising — and it's exactly the sort of experience Explora Journeys is already known for on the ocean.
⏰ WHEN WILL WE KNOW?
Nothing official yet. MSC Group would need to officially confirm the project, order ships, hire crews, and set launch dates — a process that typically takes 2-3 years minimum from announcement.
If Shipping Italy's reporting is accurate, we could see an official announcement in the coming months.
So we have to ask 👇
Would you book a luxury river cruise from Explora Journeys? And which European rivers would you MOST want to sail?
Drop your dream itinerary in the comments! 🚢🌊
