🍂🇨🇦 Northern Neighbours | Welcome to Alberta

Okay...

I have a feeling I'm going to LOVE this week.

We're heading west across Canada and landing somewhere that seems to have been designed specifically to make me want to pack a bag.

❤️ Welcome to Alberta.

This is a province of BIG landscapes.

🏔️ The Canadian Rockies.

💙 Glacial lakes that barely look real.

🌲 Forests and wilderness.

🤠 Ranches, rodeos and cowboy culture.

🦬 Extraordinary wildlife.

🚗 And some of the most spectacular road-trip country in Canada.

Of course, Alberta is home to famous names like Banff and Jasper.

And yes, we'll talk about those magnificent landscapes.

But you know me...

I'm also going looking for the Alberta that doesn't always make the front of the travel brochure.

The little museums.

The strange roadside stops.

The independent cafés.

The local stories.

The wildlife.

And the places that make us say:

"Hang on... why have I never heard about THIS?"

Because sometimes the best part of exploring somewhere isn't ticking off the famous sights.

It's discovering everything hiding between them.

And this week we're doing it as the first signs of autumn begin arriving.

Mountain air.

Open roads.

Coffee stops.

And landscapes that make you want to pull the car over simply to look.

Alberta...

🤠 WELCOME TO OKLAHOMA!

Wild Hearts Travel is heading somewhere that feels MADE for a road trip.

Big skies.

Wide-open landscapes.

Cowboy country.

Native American history and living cultures.

Route 66.

Bison.

Red Dirt music.

Small towns.

Roadside oddities.

And roads that make you wonder what's waiting just over the horizon.

This week we're going beyond the obvious and discovering just how varied the Sooner State really is.

We'll explore museums that tell Oklahoma's stories.

We'll go looking for wildlife.

We'll find somewhere wonderfully unexpected for Unique Thursday.

And because we're officially in the 'ber months, Friday's adventures are getting a little more... 👻

Interesting.

Then at the weekend we'll do what Wild Hearts does best.

Coffee in the cup holder.

Road Trip Radio playing.

And an Oklahoma road trip where taking the scenic route isn't an inconvenience...

It's the whole point. 🚗🍂

And September is a beautiful time to start thinking about Oklahoma differently.

Beyond the cities you'll find mountains, lakes, grasslands, forests and those enormous landscapes that seem to ask you to slow down and look around.

There'll be local coffee shops.

Proper diners.

Questionable dietary decisions. 😂

And hopefully at least one place that makes us say:

"I'm sorry... there's a WHAT in Oklahoma?!"

Those are becoming my favourites.

🔥🍁 Sunday Campfire | Ontario

Come and sit beside the fire for a while.

Our Ontario adventure is coming to an end...

And what a province this has turned out to be. ❤️

We found the famous places.

But we also found the Ontario hiding beyond them.

🏒 Canadian culture and hockey history.

👠 An entire museum devoted to shoes.

🦦 Wonderful wildlife.

💧 Water almost two billion years old.

🌉 A supposedly international bridge that isn't actually international at all.

👻 Ghost stories and historic places.

☕ Independent coffee shops.

🍰 And enough cake to make this week's research extremely dangerous.

But somewhere amongst all of that, Ontario reminded me of something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

We've become very good at rushing.

Even on holiday.

We arrive somewhere beautiful and immediately reach for our phones.

Take the photograph.

Post the photograph.

Check where we're going next.

Move on.

And sometimes I wonder whether we're so busy documenting our travels that we're forgetting to actually experience them.

So I'm trying something different.

❤️ Vacation Slower.

Take the photograph.

Of course you should.

But then put the phone away.

Look again.

Sit in the café longer than you planned.

Talk to somebody.

Take the scenic road.

Watch the wildlife until you're ready to leave.

Stay for sunset.

And don't panic if you don't manage everything on the list.

Leave something for next time.

Because travel isn't about proving how much you managed to fit into seven days.

It's about coming home with memories.

And often the best ones are the things we never planned at all.

So as we leave Ontario, I'm taking one thought with me:

❤️ Vacation Slower. Plan for possibility. Leave room for the story.

Because perhaps something wonderful simply needs somewhere to happen.

🔥 Campfire Sunday | Ohio

Pull up a chair.

The fire's lit.

Coffee is poured.

And another week on the Wild Hearts road is coming to an end. ❤️

Ohio surprised us.

We found music, neon, wildlife, waterfalls, history, ghost stories and even 109 enormous concrete ears of corn. 😂🌽

But perhaps the best thing Ohio gave us was a reminder to stay curious.

As we get older, I think we sometimes forget how good it feels to do something simply because...

"That looks fun."

Take the turning.

Walk into the little shop.

Stop for the view.

Try the local café.

Make the ridiculous detour.

Get far too excited about seeing wildlife.

Not every adventure needs to be life-changing.

Sometimes it can simply make you smile.

And that's enough. ❤️

🔥 The Wild Hearts Way

Don't rush.

Don't tick boxes.

Leave room for the unexpected.

Paddle in the sea.

Eat the ice cream.

Buy the cake.

Stop for another coffee.

And when you find one of those little moments when everything feels right...

hold onto it.

Those are often the memories that stay with us longest.

🚗🍁 Road Trip Saturday | Ontario

Today we're doing something a little differently.

We're going on an Ontario road trip...

But I'm NOT giving you seventeen stops and an itinerary that requires military-level timekeeping. 😂

We're going to vacation slower.

📍 Toronto → Niagara Falls → Niagara-on-the-Lake → Niagara Parkway & Wine Country

Yes, we're visiting Niagara Falls.

Because sometimes the famous places really are extraordinary, and standing beside the sheer power of that water deserves to be experienced.

But we're not going to take the photograph, tick the box and leave.

We're going to see what else this beautiful corner of Ontario has to offer.

🚗 Follow the scenic Niagara Parkway.

🏘️ Wander the historic streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

🏛️ Discover Fort George.

🌳 Stop when the view makes you want to stop.

☕ Find an independent café and stay longer than planned.

🍁 Take the backroads through the countryside.

And then?

Leave some space.

Because perhaps someone you meet over coffee will tell you about somewhere wonderful.

Maybe you'll find a farm shop.

A little restaurant.

A beautiful viewpoint.

A road you simply fancy following.

Travel doesn't have to be measured by how many things you managed to see.

Take the photograph.

Then put the phone away.

Look around.

Talk to people.

Stay for sunset.

And don't worry if there's something you didn't manage to do.

Leave something for next time. ❤️

Because the best journeys aren't always the ones where everything goes according to plan.

Sometimes they're the ones where you leave enough room for the destination to surprise you.

🍂🚗 Road Trip Saturday | Autumn in Ohio

Coffee in the cup holder.

Jumper in the back of the car.

And enough room in today's plans for an unexpected turning.

Welcome to autumn in Ohio. 🍂❤️

Today we're taking the scenic route.

🚗 Cleveland → Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Forests, waterfalls and beautiful trails. We're stopping at Brandywine Falls, taking far too many photographs and enjoying the first hints of autumn.

🏡 Chagrin Falls

A gorgeous little town with a waterfall at its heart.

Coffee. Independent shops. A wander.

No rushing.

🌾 Ohio Amish Country

Country roads, rolling farmland, local produce and bakeries.

And if we spot homemade cake...

We're stopping. 😂🍰

🍂 Hocking Hills

Woodland trails, cliffs, waterfalls and incredible rock formations.

Choose a trail.

Put the phone away for a while.

Just enjoy where you are.

❤️ Yellow Springs

Colourful, independent and full of character.

The sort of place where you plan to stop for an hour...

And leave four hours later.

🌆 Cincinnati

Our final stop.

Although Walter has suggested we make a small detour back to the sea otters.

Obviously. 🦦😂

Take the slower road.

Stop at the farm shop.

Buy the pie.

Pull over for the view.

Photograph the ridiculous roadside attraction.

And leave room for the unexpected.

Because the best road trips aren't measured by how many places you tick off.

They're measured by the moments you remember.

👻🇨🇦 Spooky Friday | Fort George

📍 Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

It's Friday...

So our lovely Ontario adventure is taking a considerably darker turn.

Welcome to Fort George National Historic Site.

Built at the end of the 18th century, Fort George became an important British military post and played a major role during the War of 1812.

The fort saw battle, bombardment, death and destruction before eventually falling to American forces in 1813.

Today its reconstructed buildings tell the story of soldiers who lived and fought here...

But according to local legend, not everybody left.

👻 Visitors and staff have reported unexplained footsteps.

👻 Shadowy figures.

👻 Strange sounds inside otherwise empty buildings.

👻 And the feeling that someone might be standing nearby...

When nobody is there.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has developed quite a reputation for its ghost stories, and Fort George is regularly associated with tales of paranormal activity.

Whether you believe in ghosts or simply love discovering the darker history behind a destination, this is certainly a very different side of beautiful Ontario.

And I know one thing...

I'd happily explore during daylight.

👻 Fright Night Friday | Ohio State Reformatory

The 'ber months have arrived...

Which means our Friday adventures are about to get considerably spookier. 👻🍂

And Ohio has given us one incredible place to begin.

📍 Ohio State Reformatory | Mansfield, Ohio

Even if you don't believe in ghosts, this extraordinary building is worth discovering for its architecture, history and one particularly famous connection to Hollywood.

Opened in 1896, the former prison looks more like an enormous Gothic castle than a correctional institution.

Long cell blocks.

Iron staircases.

Dark corridors.

And more than a century of stories contained within its walls.

Film fans may recognise it too...

🎬 The Shawshank Redemption was filmed here.

Today you can explore the historic building, learn about prison life and discover its Hollywood history.

But then there's the other side of the Reformatory's reputation...

👻 The ghost stories.

Over the years, visitors, staff and paranormal investigators have reported unexplained footsteps, voices, shadowy figures and strange experiences in different areas of the building.

Are they ghosts?

The imagination playing tricks inside an incredibly atmospheric old prison?

Or simply stories that have grown over generations?

I'll let you decide.

Personally, I'd happily explore during daylight.

After dark?

I suddenly have somewhere else to be. 😂

💧🇨🇦 Travel Thursday | The Ancient Water of Timmins

📍 Timmins, Ontario

Today's Ontario discovery might be one of the strangest we've ever featured.

Because deep beneath the ground near Timmins, scientists discovered...

WATER AROUND TWO BILLION YEARS OLD.

Yes.

BILLION. 😳

Researchers made the discovery deep underground at the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's deepest base-metal mines.

Trapped within fractures in ancient rock, this water had remained isolated underground on a timescale that's almost impossible to comprehend.

To put that into perspective...

This water predates dinosaurs.

It predates plants and animals on land.

It comes from a period long before complex life as we know it existed.

Scientists weren't interested because they'd discovered the world's most vintage bottle of mineral water. 😂

Ancient water like this can help researchers understand how water and life might survive deep underground for extraordinary lengths of time — with implications that reach far beyond Ontario.

And THIS is why I love going beyond Canada's headline attractions.

Yes, Ontario has Niagara Falls.

But it also has two-billion-year-old water hidden almost three kilometres beneath the ground.

How incredible is that?

🐍 Unique Thursday | Serpent Mound, Ohio

There are places you visit because they're beautiful.

There are places you visit because they're famous.

And then there are places that leave you with far more questions than answers.

Welcome to Serpent Mound in southern Ohio.

Stretching for more than 1,300 feet across a plateau, this extraordinary ancient earthwork forms the shape of a huge serpent, its body curving across the landscape before ending in a tightly coiled tail.

And perhaps the most fascinating thing about it is how much we still don't know.

Who created it?

Exactly when was it constructed?

What did the serpent represent?

And what was this remarkable place used for?

Archaeologists have studied Serpent Mound for generations, but questions surrounding its origins and purpose remain.

What we do know is that this landscape has enormous archaeological and cultural significance, and it deserves to be visited with respect.

This is one of the things I love about travelling across America.

You can spend the morning surrounded by modern city life...

Then find yourself standing somewhere that connects you to people who walked this landscape many centuries ago.
