🌼 Flower of the Week – Hamamelis ‘Japonica Pallida’ (Yellow Witch Hazel) 🌼

Lighting up the winter garden when almost nothing else is in bloom, Hamamelis ‘Pallida’ covers its bare branches with spidery, sulphur-yellow flowers from January into early spring, each one delicately scented and remarkably unfazed by frost. This large, slow-growing shrub forms a graceful, vase-shaped outline with fresh green leaves that turn glowing yellow and orange in autumn, so it earns its keep in the border all year round. Plant it in moist but well-drained, slightly acid to neutral soil in sun or light shade, and you’ll be rewarded with a fragrant splash of colour on even the coldest days.

a reminder that there’s always something happening, even in January. 🌿

🌸 Introducing: Flower of the Week! 🌸
We’re starting a new series here on the estate, sharing a different plant each week with a mix of history and garden magic.

🌿 This week’s flower: The Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum) 🌿
Known since ancient Greek and Egyptian times, the mandrake was once used in love potions, fertility charms, and even as a sedative in early medicine. Its curious, often human-shaped root gave rise to tales that it would “scream” when pulled from the earth, bringing death or madness to anyone who heard it, so harvesters supposedly used animals to pull it up instead. Highly toxic but steeped in legend, the mandrake sits between medicine and myth – a wonderfully eerie way to begin our Flower of the Week. 🌙🌱
