Monday Mood Board 💛 36/52

Since my post about procrastination last week, I seem to have finally flicked the switch on the coffee machine. I’m managing to tackle all varieties of things I’ve been ignoring, and honestly? It’s such a good feeling. ☕✨

The danger now, of course, is complacency.

History tells me that I feel amazing when I’m organised, efficient, and successfully grinding through the s**tty jobs. But history also tells me that after a solid period of productivity, the caffeine crash inevitably hits, and I will slip right back into *bleurgh* mode. 📉😵‍💫

And I guess that’s the most important time.

Right now, it’s easy. I’m on it, riding the espresso high, and smugly revelling in the fresh-brewed ease of it all. 😌☕

The hard part will be maintaining the momentum when this period of highly caffeinated oomph is finally slurped dry and I'm just staring at the dregs. That’s when the real work actually starts.

But for now? I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the buzz. ⚡🤍

Let's talk about procrastination. Reluctantly. 🫣

We need our Grade 2 conservation area property reroofed. It is upsetting for a number of reasons—one of them being that we had a full survey done when we bought the place—but regardless, it needs doing. We have a leak, which makes it rather urgent. 🏚️💧

So why have I been hiding from this for 12 months?

It’s not the physical upheaval I’m avoiding. It’s the planning phase. The forms, the bat surveys, the endless red tape of the whole thing leaves me with an anxiety that literally rushes through me in a physical wave. 📋🦇

Last night at dinner, simply mentioning it brought me to tears in front of six others. That's no small thing. 🥺

What I don't get is *why*. I am intelligent. I am more than capable. Yes, we are dealing with another problem behind the scenes which is big and serious and complicated and scary and long-lasting, which definitely means my available headspace is currently reduced to a cramped, dusty corner. But I also understand that the scary stuff needs to be tackled immediately, or it festers like this.

And yet...

The older I get, the more capable I am of understanding exactly how I operate—my faults, my strengths. But in this instance, understanding hasn't helped at all. I’ve still avoided the problem, and my self-awareness has actually just added to my guilt. What kind of twit knows something is a bad idea but does it anyway? 🙋‍♀️🤦‍♀️

This twit.

But on the plus side, my mini emotional leak last night resulted in my daughter-in-law telling me to just forward the information to her. And already this morning, I feel just a little more capable. 🤍

Because I guess ultimately, procrastination feeds on loneliness. By stepping in close and holding my hand, she showed me I’m not alone in this. 🫂

So this twit says thank you and I might send a card.

But I'll think about that later. 💌⏳

Monday Mood Board 💛 34/52

This week, a stage of the Tour of Britain Women 🚴‍♀️ started right here in Llanidloes. It gave me a thrill because cycling has featured heavily in my life—albeit absolutely not as a participant... good grief, no! 😮

Many years ago, my dad took my son in hand to teach him how to ride safely on the road. It was not a skill that came naturally, so it took some serious patience and commitment from both child and grown-up.

But commit they did. Within months, this previously uncoordinated child was riding in time trials and doing extremely well. That period of his life was critical in shaping who he is now as a man. Doing something that scared him, doing it repeatedly with a commitment to form, and learning through action that he was capable of something entirely unexpected. 🥇

I’m a creature of habit. It’s very easy for me to rinse and repeat my way through life because, ultimately, I’m easily pleased. I have to actively push myself out of my comfort zone multiple times a day. So, when something massive, new, and unusual lands right on our doorstep, it makes me smile. I recognize the positives that come with mixing things up a bit.

There’s a video doing the rounds of people at the event trying to pronounce our town’s name, and even that perfectly captures this theme of personal expansion.

It reminded me that I need to be less afraid of trying something new. To embrace the different, ignore the downsides, and revel in the ups.

The only person affected by my own stagnation is me—and always for the worse. But everyone around me benefits from a bit of positivity and a willingness to step into the new, even when I do so reluctantly. 🌿

So, I’m going to keep trying to push myself out of my comfort zone—much like those people publicly tackling the Welsh pronunciation.

I suppose getting on a bike would really push my limits, but let's be honest, I have absolutely no intention of going to that extreme! 😅🙅‍♀️

(Yes, I know it’s Thursday, but life got happily in the way! 😅)

We’ve had a whirlwind few days visiting my folks in Sussex, followed by a 24-hour dash into London to see Jesus Christ Superstar with .

Oh my days… it was breathtaking..... moving, overwhelming, emotional. 🎭✨

And for several different reasons the trip had me thinking about community.

While visiting my parents, who are healthily getting on in years, I see they are completely surrounded by community. It’s the neighbours who quietly look out for each other, the network of friends and family in town, and even the bin men who take the extra time to collect and return the wheelie bin right to the door for their older neighbour. It’s the quiet, everyday magic of gentle, unobtrusive support.

And speaking to my nephew recently, who has lived in London his whole life, he explained that even in a city, community is possible. Want anonymity and privacy? Go to one area. Want to walk into a pub and find dozens of people to chat to? Go to your local. You just have to consciously choose your space. 🏙️🍻

And then there’s the community of theatre. The beautiful, temporary connection between those who perform and those who watch.

Maybe some were passionate about musical theatre, maybe it was the show itself, or perhaps they were just huge Sam Ryder fans. Regardless of the reason, for a couple of hours, a room full of strangers became a community—all of us moved, overwhelmed, and completely full of joy and admiration. 🎶🤍

Community really is just about sharing something. It’s the ability to step in and out of spaces depending on what your soul needs at the time. But honestly, as incredible as it is to step into those different worlds for a little while, the best part is always coming back. Returning to our own beautiful community—the one that doesn't just last for a 24-hour trip or a two-hour show—is exactly what makes going away so special in the first place. 🌿🏡

I’ve been thinking a lot about being ‘nice.’ And honestly? I think it’s a pile of s**t. 🤷‍♀️

Society teaches us that being nice is the ultimate goal. But nice isn’t a goal, and Im not sure it's even really achievable.

In reality, ‘nice’ is often just a compliance tool—a polite, surface-level way to keep the peace, bury how we really feel, and shape-shift just to be liked.

So I think ‘Nice’ is about wanting to be liked.
But the important value, the actual ultimate goal, should be kindness.

‘Kindness’ is about how we treat people. During times of peace and times of stress. Whilst being generous and when we are maintaining our boundaries. 🤍

To be nice, well thats actually just a side effect of your own authenticity.

If you have the courage to embrace yourself, the right people find you, and they like the real version of you. *That’s* the version of ‘nice’ that actually matters. ✨

Which isn't to say that if we stop chasing niceness we should be nasty—absolutely not. Nastiness, cruelty, and unkindness are the characteristics we should be most critical of. Rejecting superficial niceness doesn't mean dropping into cruelty; it means stepping into truth.

I’m done striving for ‘nice.’ I’m striving for authenticity with a healthy dollop of kindness. 🌿

Monday Mood Board 💛 31/52

There is a specific kind of melancholy that hits when the dust settles after a special moment.

Usually, I expect it after a holiday—stepping off the plane from the warm sunshine straight into the grey drizzle. 🌧️ Or in January, after you’ve planned, eaten, and unwrapped your way through the whole of December.

This time, the comedown hit me like a freight train, and I was naively unprepared for it. 🚂💥

After the wedding, we took an extra day off work to sprawl on the sofa, clear the hangover, and process it all. I fully expected to bounce right back. Instead, I’ve spent days dragging myself around—tearful, grumpy, snappy, and exhausted. It took a full 12-hour sleep last night just to start feeling human again. 😴☁️

What I’ve realized is that the emotional comedown is simply the price of joy.

There’s the physical price of the debauchery. 🍷

There’s the energy price of peopling so hard.🫂

And then there’s the emotional price—that heavy, quiet emptiness that swells when the moment passes. ✨

It turns out joy runs on credit, and the comedown is just settling the bill. 🧾

So perhaps that sense of melancholy is actually as much of a gift as the experience itself, because you can’t miss what didn't move you. 🤍

On Saturday, our son Luke married his Chloe. 🤍

Finding words to describe such a breathtaking weekend is hard because it was, quite simply, everything. 🥂✨

Watching my boy fight back big gulping tears as he waited for his bride to walk down the aisle. Hearing the words they had written to each other. Listening to Chloe's dad tell the whole room that he knew Luke would always look after her. 🥹

Singers, guitarists, photographers, confetti, golden retriever ring bearer, divorced parents hugging, accordion players and singers jamming. 🎶📸🐕‍🦺

Coffee from the back of trucks. Tents like palaces. Games of rounders. Cider on tap. Burgers, breakfast baps, Polaroid cameras, a wedding cake straight from a fairytale... ☕⛺🏏🍺🍰

My family. ❤️

I just can’t begin to explain how magical the whole weekend was.

Laughing.
Dancing.
Drinking.
Eating.
Crying.

Can we do it again please? 🔄✨

Monday Mood Board 💛 29/52

I’ve spent the last few days knocked out of action with a tummy bug. But as unpleasant as it was, it seems to have pressed a much-needed reset button. 🔄

I’m still run down, slow, and weary, and life’s heavy realities haven’t magically disappeared. But for the first time in a couple of weeks, the fog has cleared enough for me to hear my brain telling me the positives again.

I’m remembering the simple algorithms that keep us grounded:

Problems = Life
Hurt = Love
Anxiety = Challenges
Challenges = Growth

I’m feeling a bit empty and operating in low power mode, but the physical version of *Ctrl + Alt + Delete* has done its job. The system is officially restarting.

(GH and my mum inform me that it wasn't a bug at all, but 'stress manifesting physically.' I feel slightly betrayed by their united front, even if they *might* have a point... 😅)

Either way, the timing couldn't be better. In just five sleeps, I get to watch my firstborn get married. More on that next week, but for today... I'm just quietly rebooting. 🤍🥂

Noise. 🔊

This weekend has been loud. Carnival. Huge crowds for our little town. Honking articulated lorries. Happy screaming kids. Gutteral greetings called across the streets, plastic pint glasses raised in hello. Talking. Laughing. Yelling.

And music. So much music. From the floats. From personal speakers. From raucous singalongs. From shop doors and mobile phones. From live bands and dj sets. 🎵

I rarely listen to music and I'm not good with noise in general and it worried me, when we moved from our rural island of solitude into town, worried me how I would cope, and actually its been fine. More than fine. 🥰

But this weekend felt like an attack. Not because anyone was doing anything wrong, but because my head and heart and brain is crammed to capacity and I'm strategically considering the benefits of having a breakdown. So the noise was like pouring chunky soup into a full glass of milk.

Spillage. And pretty unpleasant spillage at that. 🤢

So, my question is this.

What is it about noise.. but I suppose more specifically music.. which serves to nourish some people (most people) and debilitate others? Is it physical? Chemical? Or purely mental? 👂👂

I dont know... and it doesn't actually matter.... because one weekend that I found challenging is...
Well just that. One challenging weekend.

So hear me when I say: One weekend that was challenging for me but brought joy to so many others? That I can handle, although I might need a day of tears to decompress.

Dont worry, I'll cry quietly. 😢🔇
