Grey squirrels were first introduced to the UK by the Victorians when they were seen as a desirable garden feature in the late 19th century.
Greys adapted quickly to the UK’s countryside and were able to spread prolifically. They outcompete reds for food and nesting sites. There's lots of passionate people and groups working to save the red squirrel in Scotland including Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels. We love hearing stories about our guests sightings and encourage them to get involved in reporting and mapping these wild animals!
