Welcome to Uist Cottages, our self catering cottages Tigh na Boireach and Airidh an Dobhrain. The location in the Outer Hebrides makes these properties a perfect base for island exploration and enjoying the many outdoor activities that these islands offer. Tigh na Boireach is situated a few minutes walk from the stunning beach at Clachan Sands, North Uist where the rich wildlife and clear blue sea

creates a winning combination. The character of the outside of the property gives way to the modern, comfortable interior and is perfect for winding down after a packed day of exploring. Airidh an Dobhrain is a traditional landworkers cottage and sits on the secluded shores of Loch Kilerivagh on Grimsay Island, Benbecula. The location provides picturesque views of the loch and keep an eye out for otters and other wildlife too! The log burner provides a welcome return and the cosy interior is comfortable and relaxing. The clear, dark skies also make these islands perfect for astronomy - and keep an eye out for the Northern Lights too!

Happy World Otter Day! To celebrate here are some photos that we took of the otters in Loch Kilerivagh from the garden at Airidh an Dobhrain earlier in the year. They are often difficult to spot as they blend in with the surroundings so well but we were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time!

The Northern lights were out over Tigh na Boireach last night and the clouds cleared for just long enough to enjoy the view!

Tidying up the garden and refreshing the old ploughs with a new base and mountings and a fresh coat of paint. These belonged to the cottage when it was a working croft and we rescued them out of the field a few years ago.

Happy World Otter Day!

Did you know that otters grow to between 60 and 80cm long and weigh 6-8kg. They have an average lifespan of 5-10 years and they eat fish, sea urchins, crabs and other shellfish. The gaelic word for otter is "dobhrain" and Airidh an Dobhrain (Sheiling of the Otter) is named after the otters that live in the loch by the cottage. The best time to see otters is at dawn and dusk so keep an eye out!

Tigh na Boireach is getting a new hair-do ready for the summer! The roof is thatched using marram grass from the nearby dunes and it needs re-doing every 6-7 years.
