Kite flying is s popular hobby for many Indians, and each year on the 14 & 15th of January, in the state of Gujarat you can witness the annual Uttarayan festival, the biggest kite flying festival in the world. Open to competitors from around the globe, millions participate in the festival, see the skies awash with kites, flown from rooftops and terraces throughout the state.

The festival also announces the coming of spring, prayers are made to the Lord of the sun and traditional Indian sweets are eaten in abundance.

The festivities bring a fun atmosphere and competition is rife, so get ready to hear Kai Po Che, which means, I have cut the kite, (the opponent’s kite string).

The state of Gujarat is off most people’s radar but is in fact the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

Chase away those winter blues…..

Return of the online e-visa for UK travellers going to India!

After an extremely long wait, the Indian e-visa system is now back in operation, making travel that much easier!

January to the end of March is an ideal time to travel when the days are pleasantly warm but not at the blistering levels that summer brings.

Follow the classic golden triangle route taking in the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and perhaps extend your trip to one of the wildlife parks with the hopes of catching a glimpse of a tiger.

If you’re looking for a more chilled vibe, head south and explore the tae estates up in the hills or the sleepy backwaters of Kerala. For the ultimate getaway, try a night on a houseboat and sail the backwaters around Alleppey.

When you can’t decide between India and Nepal- do both!

The golden triangle is a popular route, especially for first time visitors.

Delhi is a picture of if history, find Mughal era buildings and the Lutyens designed buildings of the British. Jaipur is full of beautiful palaces and heritage hotels and Agra of course is home to the greatest romantic gesture of all time- the Taj Mahal.

Next fly to Kathmandu, here you can visit ancient stupas and take in the Nepalese life and appreciate the mixture of Hindu and Buddhist culture which is evident throughout Nepal.

Outside of the city, Chitwan National Park is great for game viewing, enjoy the views along the way through the mountains and along rivers. Next up is Pokhara, here enjoy boat rides, hikes and relax while you are surrounded by stunning mountain vistas. A great place to relax and unwind at the end of your journey.

If you’re looking to stay closer to Kathmandu and still enjoy the views and short hikes you can opt for a stay in Dhulikhel or Nagarkot, both within an hour of Kathmandu.

The Galapagos islands are definitely one of the highlights of visiting Ecuador.

Situated about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, this group of islands are home to many endemic species, meaning you won’t find them anywhere else in the world.

One such animal is the Galapagos penguin, which unlike its Antarctic cousin which thrives in freezing conditions, lives in the tropics. There are only around 2000 left so they fall have fallen into the endangered category.

You can find them on the islands of Isabela, Fernandina, Floreana and Santiago but if you taking a swim with them then head out to Bartolome island.

You can explore the Galapagos by basing yourself on one of the islands and taking day trips out or if you want to explore further afield, opt for a yacht, this allows for exploration of islands further away. There is a huge variety to choose from depending on your budget and travel style.

Head into the hills and enjoy the cool mountain air.

If you’re looking to escape the heat of the lowlands, then visitors may seek respite up in the hills of the Nilgiri Mountains.

Ooty, officially known as Udhagamandalam was one of the summer vacations spots for the British and the railway was built in 1908 to facilitate their journey.

Visitors flock to take a ride on board the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, affectionately known as the Toy train which travels 26km between Mettupalayam to Ooty through 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges and the full journey takes almost 5 hours, but you can take shorter stretches.

The train in featured as part of our South Indian tour and comes with your own private chauffeur. The holiday takes in many of the highlights of southern India including Bangalore, Mysore, Mudumalai for a safari, Ooty, and Kochi.

The tropical paradise of Costa Rica is an adventures dream, best appreciated by those who enjoy the outdoors.

Maison Perumal is a quaint boutique property in the coastal city of Pondicherry. Once under French rule, the city still retains a strong French influence.

It’s a small property, decorated with bright colours and period Tamil furniture, offering guests a comfortable, friendly place to call home for a few days.
