🇬🇧 Machu Picchu, Peru.
Machu Picchu is an Inca archaeological site located in Peru, in the Urubamba valley, about 2430 meters of altitude. The city was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, a historian of Yale.
Machu Picchu is also known as the "Lost Cityof the Incas" and was built by the Emperor Inca Pachacùtec most probably in 1440 AD.
There are many hypotheses about the function of this site: some scholars believe that this was a summer residence for the Emperor and for the nobility, others scholars, believe that the complex was a sanctuary dedicated to the Sacred Virgin of the Sun.
The city was definitely tied to the worship of the Sun and the stars; in fact, it is believed that Machu Picchu was also an efficient astronomical observatory.
Incas civilization lived in Machu Picchu at least until the Spanish conquest of 1532, which marked the definitive abandonment by the population.
