Most people know 34 Montagu Place as the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, but it's also remembered as the place where the couple were arrested during a police raid in October 1968.

Before stadiums, before world tours and before they became the Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World, The Rolling Stones were packing into the sweaty basement of the Ken Colyer Club (Studio 51) in London's Soho.

In 1963, the band held a residency here, performing blistering rhythm and blues sets that helped build their reputation and attract a loyal following. It was one of the venues where the Stones developed the raw sound and rebellious energy that would soon take them around the globe. (earlyblues.org)

Today, the music has long since faded, but the building on Great Newport Street remains an important landmark in the story of British rock 'n' roll—a reminder that every legend starts somewhere.

What do George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix have in common?

Remarkably, they both called the same building in London's Mayfair home—almost 200 years apart.
