Greece or Italy? – same kind of trip, completely different energy

I think people often compare Greece and Italy as though they’re competing for exactly the same holiday.

They’re really not.

When clients ask me which I’d choose, my answer is usually another question:

How do you want your days to feel?

For me, Greece is often about slowing down.

Whether that’s Paros, Naxos, Crete or Corfu, there’s usually a simplicity to the trip.

Long lunches.
Swimming before breakfast.
A harbour-side dinner that somehow turns into an entire evening.

Italy feels different.

The variety is what makes it so special.

You can spend a few days in Florence, head into Tuscany, finish on the Amalfi Coast and feel like you’ve had three completely different holidays in one trip.

Neither is better.

They’re just good at different things.

That’s why I rarely start with the destination.

I start with the experience someone is looking for.

The destination usually follows from there.

Why planning ahead still matters

Even at the luxury end.

There’s this assumption that a bigger budget means unlimited choice.

It doesn’t.

In fact, luxury travel is often the first thing to disappear.

– The best suites and villas go first
– The best room categories are usually limited
– Smaller luxury hotels fill quickly because there are fewer rooms to begin with
– The best guides, lodges, and experiences often get booked months — sometimes years — ahead

And once those are gone?

You’re left choosing from what’s available… not what’s best.

That’s the difference people don’t always see.

Planning ahead isn’t just about availability.

It’s about having the freedom to build the trip properly.

– Better flight timings
– Better room locations
– Better pacing
– Better combinations of hotels and experiences

That’s what changes how the trip feels.

Because luxury travel isn’t really about having endless options.

It’s about securing the right ones before everyone else does.

The kind of trips people come back talking about

It’s rarely the most expensive one.

And it’s usually not the one with the busiest itinerary either.

The trips people genuinely remember tend to have a few things in common:

– They feel balanced, not rushed
– There’s contrast throughout the trip
– The experiences feel personal, not overly packaged
– The pacing gives people time to actually enjoy where they are

That’s the difference.

A lot of holidays are nice while you’re there.

The memorable ones stay with people afterwards.

– The safari where everything suddenly went quiet before a sighting
– The hotel that just felt right from the moment you arrived
– The beach stop at the end that slowed the whole trip down properly
– The city you didn’t expect to love as much as you did

That’s what people come home talking about.

Not how many countries they squeezed in.
Not whether the room had a bigger plunge pool.

It’s the way the whole trip made them feel.

And usually?

That comes from getting the structure right…
not simply spending more money.

Where I’d go for winter sun right now

Not just based on weather.
Based on what actually feels worth the trip in 2026.

Because winter sun isn’t one thing anymore.

Some people want easy luxury.
Some want proper heat.
Some want something that feels completely different from a standard fly-and-flop.

These are the places I’d genuinely pick right now:

– Mauritius — still one of the best all-round luxury winter sun options if you want beaches and a polished resort experience
– Thailand — incredible value at the luxury end right now, especially for multi-centres and longer trips
– Barbados & the Southern Caribbean — better pace, stronger hotel scene, and far more character than many people expect
– Sri Lanka — one of the most interesting winter sun destinations for 2026 if you want beaches, scenery, wildlife, and something experience-led
– Maldives — still unbeatable if the goal is complete switch-off and resort-led luxury done properly
– Cape Town + safari — probably the best option if you want winter sun that doesn’t just revolve around a beach

And honestly?

I think people are moving away from “just hot weather.”

The trips that are working best now combine:

– Sunshine
– Space
– Better pacing
– And a reason to travel beyond simply sitting by a pool

That’s the shift I’m seeing for winter 2026.

The difference between good and great travel

Usually comes down to the things people barely notice at the start.

Because most trips are “good.”

Nice hotel.
Nice destination.
Everything broadly works.

But the trips people come back talking about?

Those are built differently.

– Flight times that make the whole trip feel smoother
– The right room category, not just the cheapest entry level
– Hotels in the area that actually suits how you travel
– Enough downtime between moving around
– Transfers, timings, pacing — all thought through properly

Individually, they sound small.

Together, they completely change how the trip feels.

That’s why two holidays with the same budget can feel worlds apart.

One feels easy.
The other feels slightly tiring the entire time.

And most people can’t immediately explain why.

They just know one worked better.

That’s the difference between booking travel…
and properly planning it.

Why some £10k trips feel average

And how to avoid it.

People assume a bigger budget automatically means a better trip.

It doesn’t.

I’ve seen £10k trips that felt incredible…
and others that felt surprisingly underwhelming.

Usually for the same reason:

The budget gets spread too thin.

– Trying to upgrade every part of the trip at once
– Too many stops with no real purpose
– Choosing “luxury” because it sounds impressive, not because it improves the experience
– Spending heavily on things you barely use

That’s how you end up with a holiday that looks expensive on paper…

But doesn’t actually feel special.

The trips that work at this level are focused.

They prioritise properly.

– One standout hotel instead of three average “luxury” ones
– Better flight timings instead of unnecessary upgrades
– Fewer stops, done properly
– Experiences that actually change the trip, not just fill the itinerary

That’s the difference.

Because luxury isn’t usually about adding more.

It’s about removing the things that dilute the experience.

This is what a proper multi-centre looks like

Not five flights in ten days.
Not “seeing as much as possible.”

A proper multi-centre should feel balanced from start to finish.

For example:

– A few nights in Bangkok for energy, food, rooftop bars, markets
– Then Chiang Mai to slow the pace slightly — temples, scenery, culture
– Finish on an island where you can properly switch off

That works.

Not because it’s complicated.
Because each part does a different job.

The mistake people make is trying to make every stop feel the same.

Another beach.
Another city.
Another hotel.

That’s when trips start to blur together.

The best multi-centres build naturally.

Energy → experience → relaxation.

You feel the shift as you move through the trip.

That’s what makes it memorable.

And when it’s planned properly…
the logistics disappear into the background completely.

The one decision that changes a honeymoon

And most people get it wrong.

It’s not the destination.
It’s not the hotel.

It’s the pace of the trip.

A lot of honeymoons get planned like a normal holiday… just with a bigger budget.

Too much moving around.
Too much pressure to “make the most of it.”
Too many big travel days immediately after the wedding.

And by day three, people are exhausted.

The best honeymoons feel different.

– Enough time to settle into each place
– A natural build to the trip
– The right balance between experience and downtime
– Space to actually enjoy being there, not just ticking things off

This is why some honeymoons feel incredible…
and others feel strangely stressful despite costing a fortune.

Because after a wedding, most people don’t need more intensity.

They need the trip to feel effortless.

That’s the part people underestimate.

Not where you go.
How the whole thing flows.

Why some resorts just feel better

And it has very little to do with star ratings.

You can stay at two “5-star” resorts in the same destination…
and one instantly feels right while the other feels strangely flat.

Because what actually shapes the experience is harder to measure.

– Layout — does the resort feel calm and spacious, or busy and sprawling?
– Atmosphere — quiet luxury, social energy, adult-focused, family-heavy… all completely different vibes
– Location — not just beachfront, but what the beach is actually like
– Service style — polished and natural vs overly formal or inconsistent
– How the resort flows day to day — where you eat, walk, relax, spend your time

That’s the part star ratings don’t tell you.

Some resorts look incredible online…
but feel crowded, noisy, or awkward once you’re there.

Others aren’t flashy at all.

They just get everything right.

And those are usually the ones people go back to.

Because the best resorts don’t just look luxury.

They make the entire trip feel easy.

The cruise routes I’d pick right now

Not just because they’re popular.
Because they genuinely work.

There’s a big difference.

Some itineraries look impressive on paper…
but feel repetitive, rushed, or overloaded once you’re on board.

These are the routes I’d actually choose right now:

– Greek Islands & Adriatic — smaller ports, better pacing, far more variety than the standard Western Med
– Japan cruises — one of the most interesting cruise destinations right now if you want culture, food, and something that feels genuinely different
– Alaska on smaller luxury ships — less about the ship itself, more about access, scenery, and experience-led cruising
– Southern Caribbean — longer port days, less repetitive than the usual Eastern Caribbean loops
– Northern Europe & Iceland — incredible in the right season, especially on itineraries with overnight stays

And honestly?

I think smaller ships are where luxury cruising is becoming far more interesting.

Less crowded ports.
Better service.
Routes that bigger ships physically can’t do.

That’s the shift happening now.

People are moving away from cruises that feel like floating resorts…
towards trips that actually feel immersive.

Because the best cruise routes don’t just show you places.

They change the rhythm of how you travel.
