Today I found myself Looking for London deep in the quiet, grey, deserted backstreets of the City, and came across St Mary Aldermanbury Gardens. The church is now long gone, having first been destroyed in the great fire of 1666, and the Wren replacement damaged beyond repair during World War 2. The garden is home to a memorial to Hemming and Condell, a couple of Shakesperian actors who published the first folio of Shakespeare plays, and a fine drinking fountain, complete with drinking cup.
The best thing about it, was that I was the only person there. On grey Sunday afternoons, the City still has secrets.
