A frontier town dealing in gold, ivory and spices on the banks of the Nile, Aswan has cemented its status as one of Egypt's most important cities. It became even more legendary in the 1930s, when Agatha Christie stayed at the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract to pen large parts of her bestseller Death on the Nile. The hotel is a landmark in itself, first built by travel guru Thomas Cook in 1899 as a Victorian palace to house early European travellers.⁠
