Sunny days at the Old Royal Naval College ☀️ Greenwich is such a beautiful place to explore when the weather is beautiful.
The Old Royal Naval College was originally commissioned by Mary II in the 17th century as a Royal Hospital or almshouse for Navy pensioners. The designs were by renowned architect Christopher Wren but much of the project was left to his trusted assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. The site then became a Naval College in 1873 (the name that stuck), and the site still serves an educational purpose but it is now mostly home to the University of Greenwich and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

How are you enjoying the sunshine in London? ☀️

This is Gordon Square in Bloomsbury. It’s not only beautiful and peaceful but it’s also steeped in history. Associated with this garden square are individuals like author Virginia Woolf and Second World War spy Noor Inayat Khan.

This is THE END by Heather Phillipson. A swirl of soft scoop ice cream with its very own cherry, drone, and fly round the back. Your classic ice cream toppings!
The installation is a commentary on the prevalence of surveillance in modern society - the drone is even watching you! There’s a live feed of Trafalgar Square which you can find online. The precarious, melting ice cream is also meant to reflect a society on the verge of collapse. A terrifying message in stark contrast to the cheery ice cream!

The Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square is a rotating display of modern art! You can currently vote on what will replace it next year! london.gov.uk/what-we-do/arts-and-culture/current-culture-projects/fourth-plinth-trafalgar-square/
When Trafalgar Square was being laid out in the 19th century, this plinth was meant to have a statue of William IV but it was never realised due to lack of funds.

The Tower of London opens again from next Wednesday (19th May)!!! The fortress which has stood over London since the 11th century. It’s so exciting! This is the longest that they’ve been closed since the Second World War.

19th May will also be when the Tower announce the name of their brand new baby girl raven. Her brother has already been named Edgar, in honour of writer Edgar Allan Poe, but at the moment you can still vote on what her name should be 🪶 Legend has it that there always have to be six ravens at the Tower of London. If the number should ever drop below that then the country will fall... so the Tower hedge their bets and keep a few extras. There are currently nine so we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The two new additions are the chicks of breeding pair Huginn and Muninn, and all of the ravens are wonderfully looked after by Ravenmaster Chris Skaife.
Have you seen the Tower’s ravens?
If you want to vote on the name, you can do so here: www.hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london/whats-on/the-ravens/

Horse Guards Parade! More people probably recognise this building from the opposite side where you can see the Queen’s Life Guard 🐴 These are the troops and horses who stand guard at this historic building, normally made up of either the Blues and Royals or the Life Guards regiments. They protect Horse Guards because, to this day, this continues to be the official entrance to Buckingham Palace and St. James’s Palace. There have been regular sentries on duty here since the 1660s! This large open space at the rear, the parade ground, is where you can normally watch the changing of the guard.

Southwark Cathedral! ⛪️ There’s been a record of a “minster” in Southwark since the 11th century and before the cathedral was here, this site was the Augustinian priory of St. Mary Overie. “Overie” was a reference to its location “over the river” from the City of London! It became St. Saviour’s in the 16th century and has been a cathedral since 1905. What a long history!
There are also many theatrical links in the church because Southwark was once a centre of theatre! 🎭 Just think Shakespeare and The Globe in the 17th century! Inside you’ll even find a memorial to the great Bard as well as the burials of many dramatists and theatrical entrepreneurs.

Have you seen our blog yet?
Visit our website to read about the church of St Mary Aldermanbury.

It was badly damaged during the Blitz in the Second World War, but in 1966 the remains were transported to America and the church was rebuilt!

It now stands on the grounds of Westminster College in Missouri as a memorial to Winston Churchill, which isn't as random as you may think. It was here in 1946 that Churchill made his famous Iron Curtain Speech!

There’s not much left of the church of St Mary Aldermanbury, but the space has been left as one of the City of London’s “pocket parks”. First mentioned in 1181, it was destroyed in by the Great Fir…

We're not sure when London will be back to "normal", but let's keep our fingers crossed it's soonish 🤞

Here's a photo from a few years ago of the Life Guards making their way back to Hyde Park Barracks.

They've just changed shifts at Horse Guards Parade, and it's always popular with visitors! Have you been?
