There are the mountains, of course. More than 8,000 acres of skiing, 200+ runs and enough terrain to keep you busy for considerably longer than a week.

But we'd argue that Whistler Village is just as good a reason to visit. Great restaurants, proper après-ski and plenty to do once you've hung up your boots. 🍻

Everyone talks about the size of Whistler Blackcomb. Fair enough, 8,171 acres of skiing is pretty ridiculous. ⛷️

But for us, what makes Whistler so appealing is that the village is every bit as good as the mountains above it. 🇨🇦

You've got two enormous mountains connected by the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, everything from long, gentle cruisers to some seriously challenging alpine terrain, and enough variety to spend a week skiing without repeating much at all. 🏔️

Then there's Whistler Village. A proper pedestrianised town with an excellent choice of restaurants, some of Canada's best-known après-ski spots and considerably more character than you might expect from a resort of this size. 🍻

There are some decisions worth getting right, though. Staying in Creekside is quite a different experience from staying in the main village, and the most famous après bar isn't necessarily where we'd choose to spend our money.

We've put together a closer look at Whistler, including the runs worth knowing about, our picks for food and drinks, the different areas to stay and a few things we'd bear in mind when planning a trip.

We think there's a very good argument for Whistler being one of the most complete ski holidays you can have.

⛷️ Skiing in Europe this winter? Here's what's changed for 2026/27.

Whether you're heading to the Alps for the first time or you've been skiing for decades, there are some important updates worth knowing before you travel.

🇮🇹 Italy: Helmets are now compulsory for skiers of all ages, with fines of up to €200.

🇪🇺 European borders: New biometric checks mean most British travellers will need to register their fingerprints and facial image when entering the Schengen Area.

🛂 ETIAS: A new €20 travel authorisation is planned for eligible British visitors, although it hasn't launched yet.

🎿 Insurance: Italy also requires third-party liability insurance on its pistes — an existing rule that many skiers may not be aware of.

The top spot hasn’t changed. Everything below it is getting more interesting. 👀

Italy climbs from third to second, with early 2026/27 bookings up 107.5% year on year. Austria moves into third, while Canada and Japan enter our top five — with Japan named the dream ski destination by 37% of British skiers and 57% of those aged 18–35.

Further down, value is driving change. Bulgaria, Norway, Finland and Andorra all feature prominently in the latest ski resort value rankings.

Do you remember your first time on skis?

You probably don’t remember every turn. But you might remember the nerves, the cold air, the snow under your boots, and the moment fear gave way to freedom.

Because those first little runs are about so much more than learning to ski. They teach us to be brave, to get back up when we fall, and to discover just how much we’re capable of.

They may be small moments to us, but to them, they’re the beginning of a lifetime of adventure.

Every skier starts somewhere. Perhaps this winter is where their story begins. ❄️⛷️

We’ve all read “a short walk from the lifts” and discovered that the author was clearly wearing trainers. 🎿

Ski brochures are beautifully written. Occasionally, they are also works of fiction.

How short is “short”? How lively is “lively”? And does “ideal for mixed abilities” actually mean someone spending half the week waiting beside a piste map? 🗺️👀

Because the right ski holiday isn’t the one with the best adjectives. It’s the one that still works when the boots are on, the group has split into four and somebody desperately needs a plug socket. 🏔️🔌
