Some people talk about English and Welsh wine. Ed Dallimore drove the length of the country to photograph it.

Wine writer, photographer and author of The Vineyards of Britain, Ed has spent years visiting vineyards, camera in hand, to document the producers, the places and the wines shaping English and Welsh wine today. World Pinot Noir Day. English and Welsh wine is firmly in the conversation.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the backbone of English sparkling wine, but the still expressions of Pinot are where things are getting really interesting. Gusbourne and Balfour in Kent, Ancre Hill in Monmouthshire and Simpson’s Rabbit Hole, which took Best Still Pinot Noir at this year’s WineGB Awards, are all making versions that deserve serious attention. Danbury Ridge in Essex even has a Burgundy collaboration that speaks to how far the conversation has come.

And then there’s white Pinot Noir. A red grape vinified without skin contact to produce a white wine. Oastbrook in East Sussex are doing it, and so is Renegade Urban Winery in London with their Calvin 2024 Almost White Pinot Noir.

What a Friday evening should look like.

Tamar Valley Vineyard in Bere Alston, Devon opens its gates on August 21st for a twilight guided tour through the vines as the evening light settles over the valley. Hear the story of how this patch of Devon soil was transformed into a working vineyard by the Williams family in 2016, then taste the award-winning wines paired with local cheeses as the sun goes down. Two hours, free parking, and all ages welcome.

Our friend and collaborator Alice Griffiths has officially been confirmed as a Guinness World Record holder for the most English and Welsh vineyards visited in seven days, following an extraordinary challenge during English Wine Week 2025.

From Sussex to Staffordshire, Hampshire to Herefordshire, Essex to the East Midlands, across 17 counties and hundreds of glasses of English wine, Alice met the winemakers, explored the regions and proved what we have always believed. English wine is growing in every direction and it is extraordinary.

Pizza barns, lakeside lodges, safari style vineyard tours, Michelin starred tasting rooms. Vines planted in the 1970s alongside brand new estates built with tourism in mind. The full, brilliant, unexpected range of what English and Welsh wine country has to offer.

In Alice’s own words: “The UK is home to an incredible range of producers and world class wines, and I wanted to shout about it. This record is a celebration of everyone in the industry who made the week possible, and of English wine as a whole.”

Alice is also co-founder and creative director of Uncorked Magazine alongside Rebecca Pitcairn | Writer & English Wine Expert, the UK’s only lifestyle magazine dedicated to English and Welsh wine, launching September 2026. The best vineyard visits don’t end at the cellar door, they end at the table.

Across England and Wales, a growing number of vineyards are becoming proper culinary destinations. Michelin-starred menus paired with estate wines at Lympstone Manor in Devon and Leonardslee in West Sussex. Biodynamic farm-to-table dining at Tillingham in East Sussex. Curated picnics among the vines at Gusbourne in Kent. A glass-fronted hilltop restaurant at Wraxall in Somerset, with views across the countryside and a weekly steak night to boot.

If you love food as much as wine, these are the vineyards to have on your list.

Tucked into the south facing hillsides of West Sussex, Wendy and Charles Outhwaite make sparkling wine with the kind of quiet conviction that’s hard to fake and impossible to rush.

Their Traditional Method wines, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, grown and produced entirely on the estate, are elegant, precise and very much of this place. Ebulliently English, as they put it. A banker and a barrister who swapped careers to grow grapes by hand, harvest by hand and tend every bottle from grape to glass. No shortcuts. Just patience, greensand and a genuine love of what they’re making.

Named in The Real Review The Real Review Top Wineries of Great Britain 2026, a tour here feels less like a visitor experience and more like being welcomed into something personal. You’ll want to linger.

As part of England’s largest geographic wine region, North West vineyards favour cool climate, early-ripening grapes like Seyval Blanc and Solaris, producing bright, aromatic wines with a crisp edge. Many sit on working farms, so a visit often means a proper day out: a vineyard walk, a tasting, and the kind of rural welcome you don’t get in a wine shop.
