The sixteenth century fountains of Piazza Farnese, topped with the Farnese iris, recycled vast tubs from the Baths of Caracalla. They were quarried in the early third century at Aswan in Egypt, and every time I see them I think of them atop barges negotiating crocodiles and hippopotamuses (probably) along the Nile; it is, if you will, a crocodile rock 😬. And that, chums, is just one of many reasons why Rome is just too fabulously extraordinary for words.
