It’s an immense privilege to lead tours where there are ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ sightings to be enjoyed every day. The highlight of our recent visit to was witnessing 35 dogs kill this young waterbuck - nature at its most raw, and a moment our clients will never forget.

Final moments

Our recent visit to Gorongosa NP, Mozambique, featured a superb sighting of wild dogs successfully hunting waterbuck. We were able to stay with them as they stirred from their slumber, socialised and then began their hunt, first for warthog and then for waterbuck. Here, you can just make out the calf making an unsuccessful bid for sanctuary in a shallow channel.

Join us in Gorongosa in 2023 - there is nowhere better for dog sightings in Africa right now.

Any visit to Mana Pools is always special. The light, atmosphere and wildlife combine to make this area one of our very favourites in Africa. Our client .road.runner took these lovely shots in the Chitake Springs and Nyamepi areas of the park, where they enjoyed sightings of the resident lion pride on a buffalo kill, as well as some superb elephant viewing.

We were delighted to welcome our client .road.runner to Mana Pools, Zimbabwe recently, and there are some amazing photos to share!

Arguably Mana’s most famous resident, Boswell, is best known for his habit of feeding on his hind legs. Contrary to popular belief, this behaviour is observable in many locations, but there’s no doubt Mana is the best place to observe it - especially on foot!

Here at Pictus Safaris, we love finding elusive mammals across Africa…but sometimes it’s great to focus on the ‘Big Five’! In fact, our team have seen this iconic quintuple in ten countries; Botswana, Chad, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Our wonderful client had the pleasure of encountering these special animals in Uganda in July this year - and saw plenty else too!

It was an absolute pleasure recently to be able to welcome to Uganda and Burundi.

Burundi is, remarkably, the 189th country our client has visited. And whilst Burundi has lost almost all of its wildlife, Uganda provided some wonderful sightings. Check out these amazing shots, including of a shoebill chick in Mabamba!

Our upcoming visit to Mana Pools has us reminiscing about our last visit. Spending time on foot with a pack of wild dogs is a mesmerising experience, and one we specialise in delivering for our clients.

A visit to Zakouma is incomplete without a visit to Machtour. Each day, the channel here is filled with spur-winged geese that reluctantly make way for Kordofan giraffe to drink in great numbers. At night, this is a superb area for serval, caracal and leopard!

Peekaboo! This season in Chad’s Zakouma National Park was superb for lion-viewing, including this adorable cub. We also spent time with elephant, pale fox, serval, wild cat and much more! Join us next year in what is arguably the most exciting national park in Africa.

Encounters with pygmy hippo don’t come much closer than this! Our tour leader, Tom Clode, and two clients were sat under 100m away when this beauty wandered past. We couldn’t quite get a visual, although we heard every step.

Our inaugural tours to Tai National Park in Côte d’Ivoire were a huge success, recording 52 mammal species, including zebra duiker, Jentink’s duiker and Johnston’s genet.

Check out this incredible video of wild dogs taken in the Badi area of Niokolo-Koba NP, Senegal - what a way to start 2022! Pictus Safaris cannot wait to be back in this magical park later this year, and we dearly hope to spot this fragile population of dogs on our visit.
