The Church of Saint Sava is a Serbian Orthodox Church and one of the largest in the world. If you have been to Istanbul, then you may recognise the shape as being similar to the Hagia Sophia, after which it was modelled. Saint Sava is Serbia’s patron saint and the location of the Church was chosen as it was there that Sava’s relics were burned by the Ottomans following a Serb uprising in 1594/95.

Construction of the church began in 1935 and, after interruption by war and politics, it was finally completed in 2004. The church is 70m tall (the cross extending another 12m), 91m long from east to west and 81m from north to south. The mosaics inside are incredible! The mosaic in the dome was made in Russia then cut and transported to Belgrade. It weighs 40 tonnes!
It’s free to visit the church.
