Follow in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi – and the brushstrokes of Piero della Francesca – on six walks through sublime landscapes on our 8-day Footpaths of Umbria tour.

En route, we will marvel at Piero’s fresco cycle, The Legend of the True Cross in Arezzo, and at the outstanding 13th and 14th century frescoes of the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. We will also sample the region’s wines – the full-bodied Sagrantino reds of Montefalco are a particular highlight.

Since it was set up in the 1970s, SAVE Britain's Heritage has been a tireless champion of endangered historic buildings. Join us next week for the first of three conversations to celebrate SAVE’s 50th anniversary.

The first talk features writer and broadcaster Sir Simon Jenkins in conversation with SAVE director Henrietta Billings. Together, they’ll revisit the landmark 1974 V&A exhibition, ‘The Destruction of the County House’ which sparked the creation of SAVE.

Sir Simon Jenkins, former editor of The Times, chaired the National Trust from 2008 to 2014 and writes regular columns for The Guardian.

Discover 15 of England's most splendid cathedrals in our latest news piece. From Norman grandeur to Gothic splendour, each cathedral offers a unique glimpse into the country’s architectural heritage.

Most of these sites are visited on our nine-day tour ‘The Cathedrals of England’, including York Minster, the largest of English medieval cathedrals, and Wells Cathedral, one of the first in England to be built entirely in Gothic style.

This watercolour by Charles H. Ashdown, published in 1911, depicts Chepstow Castle in Wales. Situated on the cliffs above the River Wye, this immensely impressive castle includes work from many periods between the 11th and 17th centuries.

We visit Chepstow Castle on our ‘Castles in Wales’ tour, running from 8–12 September 2025.

Our ‘Handel in Malta’ festival, 21–27 November 2025, is the first Martin Randall Festival dedicated to the music of George Frideric Handel.

The English Concert, Solomon’s Knot and the Gabrieli Consort & Players perform a range of Handel’s best works, from the beloved 'Rinaldo' to the vibrantly descriptive 'Israel in Egypt', via the virtuosity of 'Dixit Dominus', and the grand culmination – the 'Messiah'.

We hope you can join us for what will be a thrilling and utterly unique festival.

Next month we present a series of ‘in conversation’ illustrated talks to celebrate conservation campaign group SAVE Britain’s Heritage 50th anniversary. Since it was set up in the 1970s, SAVE has been a fearless, untiring champion of endangered historic buildings.

SAVE’s director Henrietta Billings leads each conversation, the first with writer and commentator Sir Simon Jenkins on the seminal 1974 ‘Destruction of the Country House Exhibition’ at the V&A; the second with Marcus Binney, SAVE’s founder and president on the five ‘Big SAVES’ that define the organisation’s history; and the final with Emma Bridgewater, founder of the world-renowned ceramic company on the adventures of bringing the potteries back to life in 1980s Stoke-on-Trent.

Open until July 2025, Japan House London's ‘The Craft of Carpentry’ exhibition is on show, exploring the tools, craftsmanship and forests which sustain a tradition of master carpentry in Japan.

Central to the exhibition is a reconstruction of the Sa-an teahouse in the temple Daitoku-ji in Kyoto.

Our tour, ‘Traditions of Japan’ examines the continuing work of its crafts-people and its art and architecture both old and new.
