The Chemin de la Liberté is often a deeply personal experience and here Colin Ward N Ireland) is raising money for the Royal British Legion and placing commemorative crosses at each memorial 🧡💛💚💙💜.

"I'm raising funds for the Poppy Appeal which helps Veterans. I would like to lay a Poppy Cross, they're only about150mm high, and say a short piece called the Exhortation at each Memorial to those who lost their lives on the trail. The Exhortation is taken from "Flanders Fields" a poem about those who were killed in WW1. It was written by a Canadian Physician. Lt Vol John McCrae"

The Port de Gireta, about 2,593 metres, was a genuine Second World War escape route linking the French Couserans in Ariège with Montgarri and the upper Noguera Pallaresa valley in Catalonia. It is particularly associated with groups of young Jewish refugees crossing during 1944.

The season for following in the footsteps of female passeurs or SOE agents in WW2 begins.

First up is Lisa Fittko, who, after having escaped from Gurs internment camp, found her way to Banyuls sur la Mer in 1940. She didn't carry a gun and only had a hand drawn map. Conditions changed quickly during her time and close relations with the developing local resistance and later Varian Fry was critical.

Navigating up through vignards, blending in with early morning workers she smuggled artists and intellectuals across over the Alberes mountains to Portbou, Spain. Expect real mountain scenarios to negotiate.

Beautiful Pyrenees winter! Up close with peak Trois Signeurs. An incredible day on perfect spring snow high up in a quest to embrace skiing! Loved it!!!

It is just incredible to think there were so many ww2 escapes in wintertime. Many suffered frost bite in weather less good than today. We crossed Fontargente in the footsteps of Sgt Raganis earlier in the season - and you could too.
