Beautiful Pyrenees winter! Up close with peak Trois Signeurs. An incredible day on perfect spring snow high up in a quest to embrace skiing! Loved it!!!

It is just incredible to think there were so many ww2 escapes in wintertime. Many suffered frost bite in weather less good than today. We crossed Fontargente in the footsteps of Sgt Raganis earlier in the season - and you could too.

WINTER PIONEER FREEDOM TRAIL CRUX DAY

Highlights were:

💫Sneaking around the corner to reach the frozen lake (only possible due to the strong team or a divert would have been needed...)
👌💥Crossing the frozen lake was incredibly beautiful
🫶 Reaching the Border of Andorra and descending excellent quality snow to reach the valley floor
🐆Following in the footsteps of pioneers using this escape route
Feeling the power of the mountains, which let us pass ⛰️

PIONEER WINTER FREEDOM TRAIL EXPEDITION
🎡🎠❄️☃️
Excited to embark on a WW2 Freedom Trail with a group of strong Welsh trekkers / Rugby players who came together to support Rugby for Heros assisting veterans transitioning to civilian life

STATUS

- Snowline far lower than initially forecast
- Started walking at -6 degrees, snowshoes came out early
- Full leg in snow submersion at times
- After around 7hrs of tough walking and +900m of ascent we finally made the winter room, legs burning, slighty cold but buzzing.

It was tough carrying a big, heavy bag in these conditions!! This is why winter isn't easy - get legs stronger note to self.

Morale is high - more to come tomorrow - strong team

Seasons Greetings! Last year was an incredibly busy and inspiring season. Some stories and situations made 2025 really stand out due to the people we were lucky enough to meet. Shared effort, tough climbs, laughter, emotion, and remembrance.

The Kennedy trip was our final high mountain Chemin de la Liberte high trail and it wastinged with white on the final col.

Imagine joining the Royal Canadian Airforce as a volunteer pilot, being helped out by local resistance in France and Spain and eventually making it all the way back home.

Thank you, Stewart for bringing your father's story to the Pyrenees and trusting us with this meaningful journey. ❤️ We are compiling the 2025 interview series coming out shortly.

The maple syrup is still going strong 🤩! Calvin, Stu and John, thank you for the fun times.

Behind the scenes stories from the Freedom Trail...Here we are faced with the tent collection mission on a most beautiful day...memories came flooding back of the long and busy season and the powerful connection between human stories, the landscape and local population.

In the winter we are checking out new exciting adventures, researching escape lines, staying fit, training and more.We are remembering all the brilliant people we have met, often who have amazing family stories or connections to the Chemin de la Liberté or an interest in WW2.

Every now and again we will share our behind the scenes stories. We will also be making some routes more accessible this year so look out for long week end options. We are excited to share more pioneer trips with you very soon.

Here is a plaque left by an escapee in one of the 2025 groups.

In memory of JCS (Hans) Warendorf CBE of Amsterdam and co-founders of the Dutch resistance paper, Het Parool, who escaped via the Pyrenees in 1943 and was awarded the Kruis an Verdienste for his war time services.

Sometimes being in the mountains is made really special by who you are with. Em, Charlie and James ticked all the boxes there and we even explored some surreal aspects of AI fun afterwards in celebration of the bears in the Pyrenees.

Apart from commemorating some pilots who were lost in WW2, poignant to a couple in the group, we thought carefully about parallels with people's current situations moving from one country to another. Thanks James too for doing a short video exploring some of the more tangential connections we have to history in this part of the world.

Looking forward to making more connections after an incredibly busy September 🧡💛💚 GO! Something to be excited for!

Lovely trip though a bit damp and chilly! Big thank you to the Chemin de la Liberte museum for arranging for us to enter when it was closed!
