Lindisfarne Holy Island: peaceful priory ruins, sea views, adorable seals… and the place where the Vikings decided to make history in AD 793. ⚔️🌊

Poor St Cuthbert probably picked the island for the peace and quiet — then along came the Vikings!

Today it’s much calmer, with tidal crossings, dramatic castles and endless Northumberland beauty. Just make sure you check the tide times… unlike the Vikings, you may not arrive by longboat. 🚣‍♂️

Today in History (27 November 1582): William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. Pictured is a marble statue of Shakespeare in Leicester Square, created by Giovanni Fontana in 1874. The statue features Shakespeare leaning on a pile of books and is inspired by the original monument in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. 📚
