Our 15-day private journey moves from Chennai’s blend of colonial heritage and living Tamil culture to the French-washed lanes of Pondicherry, through the great Chola temple towns of Kumbakonam and Thanjavur, into the faded grandeur of Chettinad, and on to the mist-wrapped tea estates of Munnar. It ends, slowly and deliberately, on a private houseboat in the Kerala backwaters and two quiet days by the sea at Mararikulam.

Each night in Madurai, as the city settles into darkness, the priests of Meenakshi Amman Temple perform one of the most quietly moving rituals in all of Tamil Nadu. The deity is carried in procession to her bedchamber, accompanied by music, flowers, and the soft glow of oil lamps. It has happened every single night for centuries.

This is the Alangara Seva — the Going to Bed Ceremony — and to witness it is to feel time collapse gently around you. The scent of jasmine and camphor, the rhythm of the nagaswaram, the devoted crowds pressing forward with folded hands.

The Nattukottai Chettiar merchants who built the region's magnificent tiled mansions also created a distinctive cuisine, shaped by the spices and flavours they brought home from their trading voyages across South and South East Asia.

Rich, slow-cooked and beautifully layered with flavour, Chettinad cuisine is unforgettable. Fragrant prawn curry infused with the flavours of the Bay of Bengal. Freshly pressed idiyappam served with delicate coconut milk. Every dish reflects a culinary heritage influenced by centuries of trade with Burma, Ceylon and beyond.

There are places in India where traditional craftsmanship hasn't been replaced by modern methods – because the old ways are still the best. Athangudi, a small village in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, is one of them.

In a quiet courtyard in Karaikudi, a craftsman carefully presses natural pigments into wet cement, repeating a process passed down through generations. Athangudi tiles are still made entirely by hand, using river sand and natural oxide colours that develop a rich patina over time.

Each tile is individually poured, not printed, and left to dry beneath the South Indian sun. The patterns are beautifully precise, yet every tile bears the subtle mark of the artisan who created it – a reminder that no two are ever exactly alike. Watching this centuries-old craft come to life is a truly mesmerising experience.

Chettinad's grand merchant mansions were built to impress, and their handcrafted Athangudi floors remain one of their defining features. Walking through these magnificent heritage homes is like stepping into a living museum of South India's architectural and artistic traditions.
