Cobblers Cove has long been one of my favourite hotels in the Caribbean. The little pink house, the pathway through the gardens filled with flowers, monkeys in the trees by the beach and striped umbrellas around the pool that make you feel like a 1950s movie star.
It has the feel of a golden era Caribbean retreat, intimate and charming, with five star service and dining, and absolutely no interest in being anything else. It has a devoted following for very good reason.
But chatting to Sam Godsal, one of the owners, over lunch in London last week gave me a completely different perspective on the place…
Sam shared some brilliant insider tips with me on the best rooms and spots in the hotel, including which row of suites to choose if shade matters to you (not the front), and her personal favourite, the Camelot suite, with its shady veranda and position in the Great House.
A few other things I hadn’t fully appreciated before talking to her: Joanna, the General Manager, is the first female luxury GM on the island. The Caribbean art collection throughout the hotel has been personally curated by Sam herself. And the hotel sits on one of the key hawksbill turtle nesting beaches in Barbados, the island with the largest hawksbill nesting population in the Caribbean, with over 600 females nesting annually. You can take the hotel boat out to swim with them.
The aesthetic is distinctive: very pink, very English country house, very specific. For the right client it’s completely perfect.
