For more than 2,000 years, pilgrims have climbed to the caves of Dambulla.

Despite appearing centuries old, Sri Lanka’s famous stilt-fishing tradition is actually less than 100 years old.

It’s believed to have developed during the Second World War, when fishermen needed to find new ways of reaching the island’s crowded fishing waters.

The fishermen perched above the waves at Weligama have since become one of Sri Lanka’s most recognisable sights. 🇱🇰
