There are destinations that photograph well. And then there's San Miguel de Allende.
The streets are narrow and cobbled, lined with buildings in burnt sienna, ochre, and deep terracotta. Bougainvillea in fuchsia and coral cascades from balconies over stone walls that have stood for centuries. And at the centre of it all, the rose-pink neo-Gothic spires of La Parroquia rise above the rooftops like something from another continent entirely.

San Miguel de Allende has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 - recognised for a colonial urban landscape that has remained largely intact since the 17th century. But what makes it special isn't just preservation. It's the way the town feels genuinely alive within it. Markets, galleries, rooftop restaurants, and some of Mexico's finest food all exist inside this extraordinary architectural shell.

At its peak around 400 AD, Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the entire world - home to an estimated 125,000 people at a time when most of Europe was living in scattered settlements.

The scale is almost difficult to comprehend. A meticulously grid-planned city. Multi-storey apartment complexes housing diverse communities, including migrants from as far as Oaxaca and the Gulf Coast. Workshops producing obsidian tools, pottery, and textiles on an industrial scale. A religious and political centre whose influence stretched across Mesoamerica for centuries.

And at the heart of it all: the Avenue of the Dead - a 4km ceremonial spine lined with temples and plazas - and the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest structures ever built in the ancient Americas.

What makes Teotihuacan truly remarkable is how much remains unknown. The civilisation left no deciphered script and no identified rulers. We don't know what they called themselves. We don't fully understand why, by 550 AD, much of the city had been deliberately burned and the culture fragmented.

The name "Teotihuacan" wasn't even theirs - it was given centuries later by the Aztecs, and it translates roughly as "the place where the gods were created."
Even they stood in awe of it.
