On a recent trip to London, the legendary David Rosenberg showed us around the East End and told us about radical Jewish history. The City of London is advancing like a glacier, but Whitechapel still has plenty of working-class history if you know where to look. Check out David’s book Rebel Footprints, published by Pluto Press, just like our book Revolutionary Berlin.

The Grand Westin is a bougie hotel at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Unter den Linden, known from countless films and TV shows, such as Unorthodox, Berlin-Alexanderplatz, and Victoria. Surprisingly, it has a socialist history: It opened in 1987 at the fanciest hotel of the German Democratic Republic, intended to get foreign currency from Western visitors. The striking octagonal foyer is a reminder of what stood here until 1945: From 1873, this was the site of the Kaisergalerie, a covered passageway for shopping, kind of a proto-mall. The Kaisergalerie was the site of some of Berlin’s earliest „Völkerschauen,“ displays of „exotic“ peoples, in the late 1800s.

We've walked past this building a million times, and finally managed to go inside: the Embassy of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in the German Democratic Republic (now the Czech Embassy in Germany) was opened in 1979. This spectacular example of socialist modernism includes custom light fixtures and red leather seats, which are all still original. It's like an ultramodern, brutalist UFO. Unfortunately they do not seem to offer tours at the moment — we visited an event about Czech literature in German translation, which was almost as interesting as the building. Five stars!

The Treptow Museum is not easy to find — it's located above a senior center at the former Johannistal City Hall, tucked behind Königsheide park in a residential area. It's worth the trip, however, to learn about the German Colonial Exhibition of 1896 at Treptower Park. 106 people from Africa and Oceania were put on display for millions of visitors. The exhibit Zurückgeschaut / Looking Back — curated by Berlin Postcolonial, the Initiative of Black People in Germany (ISD), and other groups — centers the experiences of these 106 people with detailed biographies. We learned a lot!

Next Friday, October 27, we‘re doing a walking tour about the revolutionary history of the Free University of Berlin. Visit the spots where strikes, assemblies, and occupations took place. This is an activity for new students organized by the group Waffen der Kritik (Weapons of Criticism). The meeting point is at Henry-Ford-Bau at 16:00, and the tour will be in German.

You can now get our book at the mall! Neukölln Arkaden is not a very nice place, but at least now you can read how workers and soldiers took power in Neukölln just around the corner in 1918.

On our Q***r Berlin tour, we stop at the site of the El Dorado, which was once Berlin's premiere gay night club. We just saw this spectacular new documentary on Netflix: El Dorado — Everything the N***s Hate. It combines historical footage with beautiful reenactments of 1920s drag shows. Numerous historians speak, as well as one remaining eyewitness. We were expecting a film about q***r life in the Weimar Republic, but this actually focusses more on the persecution of q***r people under the N***s. A very informative and deeply moving film!
