Shakespeare in the City Walk

Shakespeare in the City Walk A 1 hour 45 minute Tour of Shakespeare's life NORTH of the River Thames which has a 100% TripAdvisor rating. I hope to do it for 22 more!

Learn about Shakespeare's life & see many monuments - including an 18 foot totem pole!. Also hear Shakespeare speeches given by your Guide, Declan This Tour covers Shakespeare's life on the North Bank of the river Thames (NOT the South Bank where the Globe Theatre is). The Tour has been highly acclaimed and I've been performing it for 22 years. I love Shakespeare and my passion shines through duri

ng the Tour. I'd love to meet you, so come along with a friend or two, or just by yourself. You'll learn more about Shakespeare's life and personality, his work and his London - even his love-life! It's a 'feel-good' experience. I even do a few of his most famous speeches - I was a professional actor in the past - and that's a feature people really love....

In this Sonnet, Number 66, William Shakespeare is having a very bad day indeed and he provides a heart-felt laundry list of complaints about his life.

In an era of suspicion, intolerance and death-dealing, he can't be open so he tries to mask the things that are upsetting him, but there is no doubting his agitation and his sense that he is beset by a sea of troubles on every side and he feels like giving up.

At an appropriate point on the Tour, I zero in on line 4.

I talk about how his passion runs away with him here to the extent that something very important to him is not properly disguised, and how it really could have got him in a whole heap of trouble...

The 8th time, I believe, that I've performed my Shakespeare Tour for Drake University's Theatre Class.

Drake (from the US) are always great, but it was absolutely FREEZING this particular day ("it will feel like -3" warned the BBC).

I do hope they all managed to avoid colds/flu/pneumonia!

A beautiful Tripadvisor review today of the Tour:

FINDING SHAKESPEARE IN HIDDEN PLACES.

I thought I knew about Shakespeare - I didn't!

A truly great tour. Declan was entertaining and informative, leading us to places we didn't even know existed, with fascinating snippets about the Bard's life.

I felt I met the 'real' Shakespeare for the first time.

I would highly recommend this tour!

I've been doing my 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' for Drake University (coming over from the USA) for what must be close to ten years now.

I always really enjoy doing the Tour for Drake because the students are always incredibly well-behaved and attentive. They are a real credit to Drake University (and their parents, and their country)!

The teachers are great too.

This photo shows the most recent group from Drake University.

I thought it was particularly nice of them the way they crouched down to make me appear a little taller! ๐Ÿ˜

Long may our association continue...

Back in action! Hopefully, in years to come people will wonder why we were all masked.

This was taken on 12th January 2022, and it's at least the 6th time Drake University in the USA have come on my 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' Tour.

The Tour Leader gave a 5-star review on TripAdvisor, and said:

"Our London Theatre History travel seminar has been booking Declan's Shakespeare walking tour for over 6 years! Many bits of information included along a rambling walk through the passages of London, you wouldn't know to notice.

Our students love it and loved the inclusion of some of Shakespeare's words performed by Declan at key moments along the way. Will continue to book this, as long as we are able!"

In my last post I said I was resuming Tours on March 10th 2021.

I have been monitoring the situation continuously, and the first problem with March 10th 2021 is that London currently remains in the highest tier of Lockdown, and it's unlikely the 'stay at home' demand by the Government will change for a while (stay at home applies to Tour Guides too).

In addition the British Government is insisting on negative Covid-19 tests and the need to self-isolate when Tourists arrive, something that will be off-putting to many. As will be the current lack of shopping possibilities and events.

Very much connected to these Covid-19 concerns, the second problem with re-opening in early March 2021 is that many tourists who like to come on 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' are from countries such as the USA, Canada, etc, and the governments of those countries are either warning people not to travel to London as things are, and/or actively making it difficult to travel.

Plus inevitably there will be some kind of delay, even after London changes to a more welcoming stance and a lower Tier of restriction, before tourists actually appear on the streets.

For these reasons I am going to delay reopening 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' until FRIDAY APRIL 23RD 2021 at 11am-1pm

It just seems sensible.

It's 6 weeks later. It's nearer the better weather which should help 'dampen down' the virus. There should be a lot more vaccination in place. And it's likely that London will be in a lower tier of restriction, making it more attractive to visit.....

Plus, of course, this first walk of 2021 on 23rd April 2021 will be taking place on the date traditionally associated with Shakespeare's Birthday. Although, it may not be his actual Birthday, as I mention on the Tour.

I recently pulled the plug on both my Tours for the rest of 2020 because I thought it was impossible to continue.

So here's why I am back again doing my 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' every week (except this Friday 25th September) up to and including Friday October 23rd 2020.

Clarity from the Government on the position of Tour Guides had been missing, leading to much debate among Guides about whether we were permitted to continue Guiding or not.

After all, weโ€™re working not socialising, and many of us are enforcing social distancing, and making mask-wearing mandatory for everyone that attends, the Guide included.

In fact, I am at the far end of compliance because apart from the strict social distancing, I wear both a mask over my mouth PLUS a Face Shield (it amplifies my voice when I am using the head-mike).

The amp and head-microphone are further protective measures, removing the need for over-projecting.

Some London Tour Guides are not wearing masks, probably because it is highly annoying to speak for any length of time with one on. However I think this is very wrong. I hate wearing a mask โ€“ it's suffocating, and I am trying to be both informative and entertaining for 2 hours with one on - but I do it!

Anyhow, many of us Tour guides have now independently found the same official Government statement. This states:

โ€œGuided tours of up to 30 people may take place indoors or outdoors provided businesses undertake risk assessments in line with this guidance document and put any necessary mitigations in placeโ€.

We think this means that if we are careful we can continue Guiding.

But I donโ€™t want anywhere near 30 people on my Tours. With proper social distancing that number on a Tour is not practical on city streets, even nearly deserted ones.

So I am going to make it a limit of 13 people per Tour (including me).

Frankly, itโ€™s ludicrous that multiple groups of less than 6 people are allowed to enter a pub together - a fairly small indoor environment, with crowd density, stale air, and lots of surfaces - but Tour Guides have not been sure if they can operate, when we are outside in the fresh air with lots of space around us, and not many people.

A study of transmission in China found that out of 1245 cases of Covid-19, ONLY TWO CASES had been contracted outdoors.

I rest my case. So, I am open for business again and you can start bookingโ€ฆ
