Congratulations to the House Recast by Studio Ben Allen for being the overall winner of Don’t Move, Improve! 2021.

The House Recast is a spatially rich project to create an extension to a house in Haringey. Studio Ben Allen were encouraged by the client to use the project as a testbed for ideas. The architects used the house as a vehicle to push the boundaries of off-site fabrication – something that they felt was lacking in smaller-scale residential projects.

The scheme is also an exemplary case for a small, emerging practice investigating the advantages and limitations of using concrete.

‘I love that house’ – Kunle Barker, Judge.

‘It had a real coherence to it, and it had that relationship with the old. This felt like a really coherent building. It wasn’t just an extension; it was a route through the building, and it was spatially really interesting. It worked incredibly well, architecturally‘ – Tom Foxall, Judge.

Congratulations to Terrazzo Studio by Sonn Studio for winning the ‘WFH design of the year’ award, sponsored by Day True Architectural Interiors! The prize celebrates spaces that can adapt and cater for changing functions and unique needs of the users.

The Terrazzo Studio is a striking end of garden studio and workshop in , designed and self-built by the architect. The project aimed to add an additional area of work, living and creative space to a one-bedroom garden flat. The build resulted in a tropical oasis within a Victorian terrace street, consisting of a studio space that doubles as a guest bedroom and a hidden functional workshop to the rear.

‘The ambition here is just insane. And with a real quality finish. And it has the most beautiful and sexy workshop I’ve ever seen’ – Melissa Dowler, Judge.

‘This is the energy and enthusiasm of youth to an extreme level. But he had the creativity and the skill as well. And the determination’ – Tom Foxall, Judge.

Congratulations to Mountain View by Can Architects for winning this year’s ‘Unique Character Prize’! The prize is awarded to the design that shows true originality and creates its own individual personality or style.

Mountain View is a radical transformation of an Edwardian semi-detached house into a colourful family home topped with a stage set mountain. The house is influenced by the Soane Museum and other cultural pointers, including a rollercoaster and a scene from the film .

‘It goes further than anything else. It is so personal’ - Karen Stylianides, Judge.

‘We didn’t have any context to respond to, so we created our own context…We were thinking of the idea of how we could emphasise the idea of the fragility of it. So, what’s the heaviest thing we can think of? Obviously, a bit tongue in cheek, we thought of a mountain’. – the homeowner.

Congratulations to ER Residence by Studio Hallett Ike for winning the ‘Best Project under £100K’!

A ground-floor flat in an existing Victorian terraced house in North London, ER Residence is architect Studio Hallett Ike’s first project – and until recently their own accommodation – in Haringey, north London. The design considerately adds a much-needed bedroom and sociable dining room, as part of an extensive refurbishment and extension.

With a muted colour palette and an emphasis on natural materials throughout, the apartment retains many original period features, contrasting against the parred back contemporary additions.

‘I mean, that is pretty impressive, isn’t it? And it’s utterly beautiful’ – Melissa Dowler, Judge.

‘Very slick’ – Karen Stylianides, Judge.
