Here are 5 of our favourite European islands that you can reach by rail and sea. 🚆⛴️

Using a combination of trains and ferries, you can travel across Europe, stop off in some brilliant cities along the way and arrive at your island by sea. Read below to see our recommended routes for each…

1) Sicily, Italy 🇮🇹
London → Paris → Zurich → Milan → Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast → Villa San Giovanni → Messina

This journey down through Italy includes the unique ferry/rail crossing to Messina, where the entire train is loaded onboard and carried across.

2) Mallorca, Spain
London → Paris → Barcelona → Valencia → Palma

Travel by rail down into Spain, then take an overnight ferry from either Barcelona or Valencia. Extend your rail adventure once in Mallorca with the scenic rail line from Palma to Soller.

3) Corsica, France 🇫🇷
London → Paris → Toulon/Marseille/Nice → Bastia

High-speed trains in make this a straightforward journey to the South of France where you board the ferry to Corsica. The island also has scenic coastal and mountain railways.

4) Malta 🇲🇹
London → Paris → Turin → Naples → Villa San Giovanni → Messina → Taormina → Siracusa → Pozzallo → Valletta

Visit two of our favourite European islands in one holiday with this journey to Malta via Sicily.

5) Santorini, Greece 🇬🇷
London → Paris → Turin → Bari → Patras → Athens → Santorini

By travelling this route via Italy and mainland Greece, you can reach Santorini and many other Greek Islands including Crete and Mykonos.

We recently visited Lake Brienz, one of Switzerland's beautiful lakes. Here are a few photos we took. 🇨🇭

The lake is known for its turquoise water and is easy to reach by rail, with the Brünig Line connecting Interlaken and Lucerne. Nearby, the steam-hauled Brienz Rothorn Railway offers a scenic journey into the mountains above the lake. You can also take boat cruises on the lake.

Our favourite hotel in the area is the Grandhotel Giessbach, overlooking Lake Brienz beside the Giessbach Falls and accessible by a historic funicular railway. To find out more about this hotel, check out our blog here:
